Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) faced backlash at the start of the week for advocating for lowering bail amounts set by prosecutors in the New York City court system, which comes just a day after a man who was out on \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/breaking-wisconsin-da-admits-waukesha-person-of-interest-released-on-inappropriately-low-bail-before-tragedy\">inappropriately low<\/a>\u201d bail killed at least five people and injured well over 40 others during a Christmas parade in a different part of the country.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have grave concerns that excessive bail amounts are leading to unnecessary pretrial detention and contributing to a humanitarian crisis in New York City\u2019s jail system, particularly on Rikers Island,\u201d AOC and two other members of Congress said in a statement. \u201cFourteen people have died this year in the custody of New York City Department of Correction. Condemning thousands of individuals to languish in an environment plagued by persistent overcrowding and mounting violence as they await trial is not acceptable, and risks violating the federal civil rights of these individuals. If these conditions are not addressed, federal intervention may be necessary to protect detainees from additional harm.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Daily Wire reported:<\/p>\n<p><em>Ocasio-Cortez\u2019s remarks come just one day after&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/alleged-waukesha-killer-charged-with-5-counts-of-intentional-homicide-alleged-social-media-posts-show-extreme-views-reports\">a 39-year-old black male<\/a>&nbsp;was taken into custody by law enforcement officials and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/waukesha-parade-christmas-wisconsin-darrell-brooks-11637607146\">charged<\/a>&nbsp;with five counts of first-degree intentional homicide after&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/breaking-more-video-details-emerge-of-suv-running-over-people-during-waukesha-christmas-parade\">driving<\/a> over dozens of people in a Christmas parade. \u2026<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Earlier this month, the suspect was arrested for allegedly punching his child\u2019s mother in the face and hitting her with his car at a gas station. The criminal complaint from the incident&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/us\/live-news\/wisconsin-waukesha-christmas-parade-car-plow-11-22-21\/index.html\">says<\/a>&nbsp;that \u201cofficers observed tire tracks on her left pants leg.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The suspect was later released on $1,000 bail, which the Milwaukee Co.
