Rowling stated in a series of tweets:<\/p>\n<p><em>If sex isn\u2019t real, there\u2019s no same-sex attraction. If sex isn\u2019t real, the lived reality of women globally is erased. I know and love trans people, but erasing the concept of sex removes the ability of many to meaningfully discuss their lives. It isn\u2019t hate to speak the truth. \u2026 The idea that women like me, who\u2019ve been empathetic to trans people for decades, feeling kinship because they\u2019re vulnerable in the same way as women \u2014 ie, to male violence \u2014 \u201chate\u201d trans people because they think sex is real and has lived consequences \u2014 is a nonsense.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Redmayne criticized Rowling to <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2020\/film\/news\/eddie-redmayne-jk-rowling-anti-trans-tweets-harry-potter-fantastic-beasts-1234630226\/\">Variety<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p><em>Respect for transgender people remains a cultural imperative, and over the years I have been trying to constantly educate myself. I disagree with Jo\u2019s comments. Trans women are women, trans men are men and non-binary identities are valid. I would never want to speak on behalf of the community but I do know that my dear transgender friends and colleagues are tired of this constant questioning of their identities, which all too often results in violence and abuse. You get this in Redmayne\u2019s performance, of course, only instead of approximating a single individual, he\u2019s approximating femininity itself, ratcheting his exaggerated, nervous physical ticks to 11 when playing both Einar and Lili. As Einar, he\u2019s doing a proto-Stephen Hawking, with shaking hands, sad eyes, a sickly complexion, and a breathy voice.
