The law had called for the chemical castration of serial rapists, which was a punishment Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan had specifically advocated for over the past year. Bangash)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cThe prime minister\u2019s remarks came amid a national outcry stemming from the September 2020 assault on a woman, who was dragged out of her car and raped by two men at gunpoint in front of her children, when her car was stalled on the side of the road,\u201d VOA recalled on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>The incident sparked a major uproar by the Pakistani public, which subsequently demanded Islamabad enforce stiffer penalties for sex offenders to deter rape. Asked by a reporter about the September 2020 motorway rape a week after it took place, Khan <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-pakistan-rape-punishment\/pakistani-prime-minister-suggests-chemical-castration-for-rapists-idUSKBN26533N\">said<\/a> he believed the perpetrators should be publicly hanged. He acknowledged this form of punishment might have endangered a \u201cpreferential trade status\u201d bestowed upon Pakistan by the European Union (E.U.) due to the bloc\u2019s views on human rights. The consideration inspired Khan to consider other penalties for rape, such as chemical castration.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe way there is first degree, second degree, third-degree murder, this [rape] should be graded in the same way, and when there is first degree [rape], castrate them,\u201d the prime minister told reporters at the time. \u201cOperate on them and make them unable to do this.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B3\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cIn Pakistan, at least 11 rape cases are reported daily with over 22,000 rape cases reported to police across the country in the last six years,\u201d Asian News International (ANI) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aninews.in\/news\/world\/asia\/sexual-assault-cases-continue-to-rise-in-pakistan-as-another-motorway-rape-case-emerges20211018233929\/\">reported<\/a> on October 18, citing data provided by Pakistan\u2019s government.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOnly 77 accused of the 22,000 cases were found to be convicted and the conviction rate is sadly around 0.3 percent,\u201d the Indian news agency observed.<\/p>\n<p>Pakistan\u2019s new anti-rape law promises to enact a number of reforms designed to discourage serious sex crimes.
