Brooks Jr., who has an extensive <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/crime\/2021\/11\/22\/reports-darrell-e-brooks-identified-as-person-of-interest-in-wisconsin-christmas-parade-massacre\/\">criminal record<\/a> \u2013 was released on $1000 bond days prior to when he allegedly plowed an SUV into crowds of people.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"css-901oao css-16my406 r-poiln3 r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0\">In a tweet on Monday morning, AOC shared a letter that she penned with Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-NY) and Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD) asking New York City\u2019s five District Attorneys for information on \u201ce<\/span><span class=\"css-901oao css-16my406 r-poiln3 r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0\">xcessive bail in the NYC court system \u2013<\/span><span class=\"css-901oao css-16my406 r-poiln3 r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0\"> particularly for low-income defendants.\u201d She tweeted:<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"gmxrevmore\" class=\"H\"><\/figure>\n<blockquote readability=\"8\">\n<p><span class=\"css-901oao css-16my406 r-poiln3 r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0\">More than 75% of individuals in custody haven\u2019t been convicted of a crime, and are confined in unsafe conditions simply because they cannot afford cash bail. The letter said:<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"8\">\n<p><span class=\"css-901oao css-16my406 r-poiln3 r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0\">We have grave concerns that excessive bail amounts are leading to unnecessary pretrial detention and contributing to a humanitarian crisis in New York City\u2019s jail system, particularly on Riker\u2019s Island. 14 people of died this year in the custody of New York City Department of Corrections.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span class=\"css-901oao css-16my406 r-poiln3 r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0\">The letter further emphasized that \u201cfederal intervention\u201d may be necessary.:<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<blockquote readability=\"10\">\n<p>Condemning thousands of individuals to languish in an environment plagued by persistent overcrowding and mounting violence as they await trial is not acceptable, and risks violating the federal civil rights of these individuals. If these conditions are not addressed, federal intervention may be necessary to protect detainees from additional harm.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The topic of bail reform was thrust into the national spotlight on Monday after Darrell E. Brooks Jr. was identified as the suspect arrested for the Waukesha massacre.&nbsp;According to Wisconsin&nbsp;<a class=\"x5l\" href=\"https:\/\/wcca.wicourts.gov\/caseDetail.html?caseNo=2021CF004596&amp;countyNo=40&amp;index=0&amp;mode=details\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external\">court records<\/a>, a 39-year-old Darrell E. Brooks of Milwaukee had one pending charge of felony bail jumping and one charge of felony 2nd degree recklessly endangering safety with domestic abuse assessments. He also had one misdemeanor charge of resisting a police officer, disorderly conduct, and battery. The alleged offenses occurred on November 2, 2021; this same Brooks was released on a $1000 bond on November 19 \u2013 just two days before the attack.<\/p>\n<p>Brooks also had a lengthy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/us\/waukesha-parade-darrell-brooks-freed-active-warrant-nevada\">criminal record <\/a>relating to battery and firearms charges going back to 1999, including an outstanding warrant for sex crimes in the state of Nevada. Fox News noted:<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"9\">\n<p>Two separate judges freed him on low-cost bail. First for $500 in February after allegedly shooting at his nephew the previous summer and again for $1,000 earlier this month after a woman accused him of punching her and running her over with the same SUV that allegedly plowed through Waukesha\u2019s Christmas parade.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Milwaukee District Attorney John Chisholm has been an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/politics\/2021\/11\/22\/olte-democrat-run-city-released-darrell-brooks-on-1000-bail-days-before-parade-massacre\/\">outspoken supporter<\/a> of bail reform and even previously praised the election of Los Angeles District Attorney George Gascon, notorious for his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/11\/17\/magazine\/george-gascon-los-angeles.html\">soft on violent crime<\/a> policies.<\/p>\n<p>In a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/darrell-brooks-should-not-have-been-released-low-bail-milwaukee-da-admits-1652059\">statement<\/a> following the attack, Chisholm said that the \u201cbail recommendation\u201d for Darrell Brooks was \u201cnot consistent\u201d with his policies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe bail recommendation, in this case, is not consistent with the approach of the Milwaukee County District Attorney\u2019s Office toward matters involving violent crime,\u201d he said, \u201cnor was it consistent with the risk assessment of the defendant prior to the setting of bail.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Open socialist Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) promoted bail reform efforts just one day after the Waukesha, Wisconsin, Christmas parade, where the suspect \u2013 Darrell E.
