However, the school still received several complaints from students surrounding material within drama and literature courses.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"gmxrevmore\" class=\"H\"><\/figure>\n<p>In response, Warwick scrapped the phrase \u201ctrigger warning\u201d for being too \u201cprovocative\u201d in itself. A freedom of information <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-10225629\/Warwick-University-scraps-term-trigger-warning-fears-phrase-UPSET-students.html\">request<\/a> from the <em>Mail on Sunday<\/em> uncovered the new guidance, which has updated the warnings to be referred to as \u201ccontent notes\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTrigger warnings are now referred to as \u2018content notes\u2019 due to the word \u2018trigger\u2019 being itself a provocative word,\u201d the university guidance said.<\/p>\n<p>One such \u2018content note\u2019 states: \u201cStudying literature necessarily involves confronting particular ideas, words and experiences that you might find offensive, upsetting, or disturbing. All of the modules you take in the department will involve material that can be difficult for some people, even traumatic.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>A spokesman for the university said that Warwick makes it practice to help students handle \u201cdifficult and complex questions\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The spokesman added that the university\u2019s English and Comparative Literary Studies department \u201chas always had strategies in place to address these questions, although the way these strategies are flagged has changed.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\" readability=\"7.8212290502793\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Exclusive Video: The West Has Become \u2018Complacent\u2019 in Defending Free Speech, Warns Baroness Fox <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/sUQ4m4SlAb\">https:\/\/t.co\/sUQ4m4SlAb<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Breitbart London (@BreitbartLondon) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BreitbartLondon\/status\/1447517333384097795?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">October 11, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Trigger warnings have become increasingly commonplace in British education, with a taxpayer-funded project from Cambridge University even adding the warnings to classic children\u2019s books including from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/europe\/2021\/10\/25\/cancel-cat-in-the-hat-cambridge-adds-trigger-warnings-to-dr-seuss-books\/\">Dr Seuss<\/a> over alleged racism.<\/p>\n<p>Greenwich University has also adopted the new phraseology of \u2018content notes\u2019 earlier this year. Over 80 plays, novels, and films have been stamped with the warnings, ironically including George Orwell\u2019s dystopian classic <em>1984.<\/em>&nbsp;The warnings have been added to a translation of <em>The Odyssey<\/em> by Homer and&nbsp;H. G. Wells\u2019s <em>War Of The Worlds<\/em>&nbsp;as well for containing&nbsp;subjects that may be seen as \u201cnot comfortable\u201d.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B3\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<p>Students at&nbsp;Greenwich were also told that reading tragedies from William Shakespeare may be \u201cemotionally challenging\u201d as they are \u201criddled with representations of violence and the suffering caused by violent acts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The use of trigger warnings has extended beyond universities and into British society as a whole, with the BBC going so far as to add a warning to a 2020 reunion episode of the classic Will Smith comedy show <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/europe\/2021\/02\/08\/bbc-adds-trigger-warnings-fresh-prince-bel-air-blackadder\/\"><em>The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air<\/em><\/a> earlier this year.<\/p>\n<p>The decision to scrap the term \u201ctrigger warning\u201d by Warwick University was criticised by Tory MP Andrew Bridgen, who accused the school of babying students.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWarwick\u2019s decision to take offence at the word trigger is ludicrous. How is this preparing students for a life in the outside world? Who is actually calling for these trigger or content warnings? Is it resilient young people or woke-afflicted academics?\u201d he questioned.<\/p>\n<p>Bridgen continued: \u201cWhen I attended university, it was to be educated and prepared for the world of work.
