They could spend their lives in prison.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Travis McMichael, 35, took the stand at the trial in Georgia this week.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">In February 2020, Travis and Gregory McMichael grabbed guns and chased Arbery after he ran past their home. Bryan followed after and recorded video on his phone of the event. Arbery was shot by Travis McMichael after a confrontation between the two.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Head prosecutor Linda Dunikoski cross-examined Travis McMichael on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cNot once during your statement to the police did you say that you and your father were trying to arrest Mr. Arbery, did you?\u201d Dunikoski asked.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201c\u2018No, ma\u2019am,\u2019 McMichael answered. He later said he never had time to tell Arbery that he was under arrest for any crime,\u201d NPR <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2021\/11\/18\/1056813652\/travis-mcmichael-ahmaud-arbery-trial-latest-testimony\">reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The outlet noted that there were new facts discussed on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">It added:<\/p>\n<p><em>McMichael introduced two new details on Thursday \u2014 first, by saying that during the chase, Arbery briefly stopped running, and second, by saying that Arbery took off again after McMichael told him the police were coming.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Dunikowski questioned him about those details, saying McMichael had not relayed them in earlier statements to police. McMichael said he was nervous and traumatized after the shooting.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The outlet continued:<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Dunikoski reviewed McMichael\u2019s actions and statements about the McMichaels\u2019 chase. McMichael said he was driving when he saw a man \u2018lurking\u2019 and \u2018creeping\u2019 outside the home. He turned his vehicle to point his headlights on Arbery, he said, and the man tried to hide behind a portable toilet at the construction site.\u201d\u201cHe comes out and pulls up his shirt, and goes to reach in his pocket or waistband area,\u201d McMichael said.\u201cIt freaked me out,\u201d said McMichael, who after that went to his house and called 911. \u201cOnce I realized what\u2019s going on, he\u2019s doing this, I\u2019m under the assumption he\u2019s armed. I jumped back into the vehicle and he runs into the house.\u201d\u201cMcMichael told defense attorneys he moved into the neighborhood in 2018 and grew concerned about car break-ins, \u2018suspicious persons\u2019 and the theft of his pistol,\u201d\u00a0reports\u00a0USA Today of the trial. \u201cMcMichael said he would often discuss crime with neighbors, some of whom began installing surveillance cameras on their houses, and his family, including father Greg McMichael.\u201d\u201cI want to give my side of the story,\u201d McMichael said on Wednesday.McMichael\u00a0gave\u00a0an emotional testimony, admitting on the stand, \u201cI shot him.\u201d When asked why he shot him, McMichael said, \u201cHe had my gun. He struck me, it was obvious that he was \u2026 attacking me, that if he [would] have [gotten] the shotgun from me, then it was a \u2026 life or death situation.\u201dMcMichael appeared to choke up a few times and wiped his eyes after saying it \u201cwas a blur\u201d after he realized Arbery was dead and the police were there.At the time of the shooting, a citizen\u2019s arrest law in Georgia permitted people to \u201carrest\u201d a person under certain conditions if they committed a crime.
