Scott Miller.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>According to Shrier\u2019s report, some of the union\u2019s workshops advised teachers on how to create the LGBTQ clubs commonly known as \u201cGay-Straight Alliance\u201d (GSA) groups, while one \u2013 \u201cQueering in the Middle\u201d \u2013 zeroed in on how to especially grab the attention of middle school-age children.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.listennotes.com\/podcasts\/teacher-stories\/teacher-lori-caldeira-talks-IxipRYm4qst\/\">Lori Caldeira<\/a>,&nbsp;Buena Vista Middle School teacher and LGBTQ-club adviser in the&nbsp;Spreckels Union School District (SUSD) is reportedly heard on an audio file addressing the issue of what to do about parents who object to their 12-year-old participating in an LGBTQ club.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause we are not official \u2013 we have no club rosters, we keep no records,\u201d Caldeira reportedly said. \u201cIn fact, sometimes we don\u2019t really want to keep records because if parents get upset that their kids are coming? We\u2019re like, \u2018Yeah, I don\u2019t know. Maybe they came?\u2019 You know, we would never want a kid to get in trouble for attending if their parents are upset.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another middle school teacher, Kelly Baraki, was reportedly heard describing how she has changed the name of her \u201cGSA\u201d to the \u201cEquity Club,\u201d and then later to \u201cYou Be You,\u201d in order to keep parents at bay.<\/p>\n<p>Shrier said both Caldeira and Baraki led a workshop titled, \u201cHow we run a \u2018GSA\u2019 in Conservative Communities.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B3\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<p>Keeping middle school children focused on their sexual orientations and gender identities is still a challenge to these activist teachers.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_16872410\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\" readability=\"36\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/LGBT-child.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-16872410\" src=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/LGBT-child.jpg\" alt=\"NEW YORK, NY - JUNE 26: A boy carries a flag during the New York City Pride March, June 26, 2016 in New York City. (Photo by Eric Thayer\/Getty Images)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Shrier reported advice from Baraki:<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<blockquote readability=\"13\">\n<p>So, we started to try and identify kids. When we were doing our virtual learning \u2013 we totally stalked what they were doing on Google, when they weren\u2019t doing school work. One of them was googling \u201cTrans Day of Visibility.\u201d And we\u2019re like, \u201cCheck.\u201d We\u2019re going to invite that kid when we get back on campus. Whenever they follow the Google Doodle links or whatever, right, we make note of those kids and the things that they bring up with each other in chats or email or whatever.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cWe use our observations of kids in the classroom\u2014conversations that we hear\u2014to personally invite students,\u201d Baraki reportedly continued. \u201cBecause that\u2019s really the way we kinda get the bodies in the door. Right? They need sort of a little bit of an invitation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Caldeira reportedly said she uses her job as the teacher who runs morning announcements as another strategy:<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"15\">\n<p>I\u2019m the one who controls the messaging. Everybody says, \u201cOh, Ms. Caldeira, you\u2019re so sweet, you volunteered to do that.\u201d Of course, I\u2019m so sweet that I volunteered to do that. Because then I control the information that goes home. And for the first time, this year, students have been allowed to put openly LGBT content into our morning announcement slides.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Caldeira apparently touted in the audio clip that her LGBTQ student \u201cteam\u201d consists of three children, \u201ctwo of them are non-binary, and the other one is just very fluid in every way \u2013 she\u2019s fabulous.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B4\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cSo, it\u2019s actually a nice group,\u201d she reportedly said. \u201cAnd the principal, she may flinch, but she [flinches] privately.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>To prevent the problem of \u201cparent backlash\u201d after middle schoolers spill the beans to their parents about the actual content of the \u201canti-bullying\u201d presentation taught by Caldeira and Baraki, Shrier reported Baraki said, \u201cNext year, we\u2019re going to do just a little mind-trick on our sixth graders.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The teacher explained:<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"11\">\n<p>They were last to go through this presentation and the gender stuff was the last thing we talked about. So next year, they\u2019ll be going first with this presentation and the gender stuff will be the first thing they are about. Hopefully to mitigate, you know, these kind of responses, right?<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cParents who oppose this material being taught to their sixth graders will find that their objections arrive too late,\u201d Shrier noted, commenting further on some of the two teachers\u2019 remarks about parent objections.<\/p>\n<p>Baraki, for example, mocked one parent who objected to the presentation, asserting she had not planned on discussing gender identity with her middle school-age child as yet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know, so sad, right?\u201d Baraki was apparently heard ridiculing the parent. \u201cSorry for you, you had to do something hard! Honestly, your twelve-year-old probably knew all that, right?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When another parent voiced strong objections to the content of the presentation and the principal suggested she send her child to a private school, Caldeira reportedly said, \u201cSo that was a win, right? We count that as a win.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPlus, I hate to say this, but thank you CTA\u2014but I have tenure!\u201d the teacher boasted further. \u201cYou can\u2019t fire me for running a GSA. And so, you can be mad, but you can\u2019t fire me for it. CTA has made it very clear that they are devoted to human rights and equity. They provide us with these sources, these resources and tools.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Shrier observed the irony of Caldeira\u2019s comment to her teacher audience.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou should know, we\u2019ve also acted with great integrity in the past several years that we have run [a GSA],\u201d Caldeira reportedly said. \u201cWe never crossed a line. We\u2019ve wanted to, but we never have.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\" readability=\"7.6608187134503\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">UPDATE from the School District re: Yesterday&#8217;s Bombshell About Activist Teachers <\/p>\n<p>\ud83d\udd25\ud83d\udd25\ud83d\udd25<a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/y72huKIAzV\">https:\/\/t.co\/y72huKIAzV<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Abigail Shrier (@AbigailShrier) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AbigailShrier\/status\/1461815841129959433?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">November 19, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The school district <a href=\"https:\/\/spreckelsdistrict.org\/2021\/statement-from-the-district\/\">provided<\/a> the following response to Shrier\u2019s report, noting, \u201cThe teachers were using personal leave to lead a breakout session in their roles as CTA members; they were not officially presenting on behalf of SUSD, nor were their presentation materials or comments reviewed by SUSD administration.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMany of the comments and themes stated in the article are alarming, concerning, disappointing, and do not in any way reflect the District or Board of Education\u2019s policies and practices,\u201d SUSD officials said, addressing the steps the district is now taking:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li readability=\"-1\">\n<blockquote readability=\"7\">\n<p>The student club mentioned in the article, UBU (You be You), has been suspended.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/li>\n<li readability=\"-1\">\n<blockquote readability=\"7\">\n<p>Any future student clubs will be required to submit an outline of all activities and materials before being allowed to meet. Student sign-in sheets will be maintained and parent\/guardian permission slips will be sent home prior to a club holding a meeting.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/li>\n<li readability=\"-1.5\">\n<blockquote readability=\"6\">\n<p>All messaging shared in the morning announcements will now be controlled and distributed by the site principal. This practice will be in place permanently.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/li>\n<li readability=\"0\">\n<blockquote readability=\"9\">\n<p>Any presentation or assembly involving sensitive themes such as sexuality will be created in line with state-approved standards and curriculum, and under the supervision of site and district administration.
