Cori Bush\u2019s claim that white supremacists shot at Ferguson protesters.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>When asked if he could recall any such incident, McCall Jr. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stltoday.com\/news\/local\/govt-and-politics\/rep-cori-bush-says-white-supremacists-shot-at-ferguson-protesters-but-chief-not-aware-of\/article_fbf2b08a-a49e-504b-8080-13dfb6f9f947.html\">responded<\/a>, \u201cNot that I\u2019m aware of.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Moreover, numerous mainstream fact-checkers either ignored or downplayed the claim.<\/p>\n<p>As of Friday morning, CNN\u2019s fact-checker <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/profiles\/daniel-dale\">Daniel Dale<\/a> had not commented on Bush\u2019s claim. Neither had many other fact-checking organizations, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/fact-checker\/\">The Washington Post<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/news\/factcheck\/\">USA Today<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politifact.com\/personalities\/cori-bush\/\">Politifact<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.factcheck.org\/search\/#gsc.tab=0&amp;gsc.q=cori%20bush&amp;gsc.sort=\">FactCheck.org<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/leadstories.com\/cgi-bin\/mt\/mt-search.fcgi?IncludeBlogs=1&amp;search=cori+bush\">Lead Stories<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.snopes.com\/fact-check\/cori-bush-ferguson\/\">Snopes<\/a> did investigate Bush\u2019s claim, but they gave it a more forgiving \u201cUnproven\u201d rating:<\/p>\n<p><em>Bush\u2019s claim was a remarkable one, and suggested that white supremacists were effectively given license to shoot at Black protesters in Ferguson, and never brought to justice for what would be very serious violent crimes. It was also one that could not be quickly or readily corroborated, which prompted <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.md\/rgKYz\">significant skepticism<\/a> about its veracity. Ferguson Police Chief Frank McCall no doubt added to that skepticism when he <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.md\/952Rx\">told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch<\/a> he was not aware of any such incident having taken place.&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The congresswoman\u2019s claim was not fabricated out of thin air, but rather related to a specific alleged incident in January 2015. However, we have not yet been able to obtain evidence that supports her core claim, namely that known white supremacists did indeed shoot at protesters, in their capacity as protesters. The question we need to ask is why white supremacists feel empowered to open-carry rifles, incite violence, and put Black lives at risk across our country,\u201d they said.Local activist Ohun Ashe also referenced the account of Bush.\u201cI vividly remember hiding under porches in Canfield as shots were fired at us,\u201d\u00a0Ashe tweeted.\u00a0\u201cNo one came to help us. Ferguson police would be nearby.
