With 25,000 employees, it is also the Commonwealth of Virginia\u2019s largest industrial employer.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"gmxrevmore\" class=\"H\"><\/figure>\n<p>Initially, the shipyard announced all 25,000 employees would be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wavy.com\/news\/local-news\/newport-news\/newport-news-shipbuilding-suspends-jan-4-covid-19-vaccination-deadline\/\">required<\/a> to be fully vaccinated by December 8 as a \u201ccondition of continued employment,\u201d according to WAVY. That deadline was extended to January 4, with the blessing of the federal government, but has now been suspended.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>In a letter to employees, HII president and CEO Mike Petters <a href=\"https:\/\/huntingtoningalls.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/HII-Executive-Memo-Mike-Petters-Vaccine-Mandate-Update-November-16-2021.pdf\">said<\/a>, \u201cimplementation of the federal government\u2019s vaccine mandate has been a complex undertaking,\u201d and that now the \u201csituation has evolved.\u201d He also noted, \u201cWe have not wanted to lose a single employee to the virus, or to the effect of the mandate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But some shipyard employees \u201cfeel tricked\u201d according to WTKR, explaining to the outlet that \u201cthey only got the vaccine because of the mandate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Deshawn Royal, a Newport News Shipbuilding employee, told WTKR, \u201cThey made me get it and then lifted it. \u2026&nbsp;I didn\u2019t want to get it, but they said I had to get it or we were going to get fired. And then they lifted it. Y\u2019all did us wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>WTKR spoke to another employee, Rodney Apop, who was reportedly \u201chappy to get vaccinated,\u201d but explained that many of his colleagues felt similarly to Royal. \u201cThey went ahead and jumped, and they didn\u2019t have the choice to do it,\u201d Apop said, continuing, \u201cAnd now when they take [the mandate] away, they wish they had known so they didn\u2019t have to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>WTKR also reported that employees believe the mandate was lifted after workers threatened to quit. As Royal explained, \u201cYou\u2019re gonna lose your people. \u2026&nbsp;Not everybody is gonna get it.
