He and the two other men could spend their lives in prison.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">In February 2020, Travis McMichael and his father, Gregory McMichael, grabbed guns and chased Arbery after he ran past their home. Their neighbor, William \u201cRoddie\u201d Bryan, followed after and recorded video on his phone of the event. Arbery was shot by Travis McMichael after a confrontation between the two.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">\u201cI want to give my side of the story,\u201d McMichael said on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">As <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/world\/article-defendant-takes-stand-in-trial-over-killing-of-ahmaud-arbery-2\/\">reported<\/a> by The Associated Press, \u201c[McMichael] said he first ran into Arbery at the house under construction on Feb. 11, 2020. McMichael said he was driving when he saw a man \u2018lurking\u2019 and \u2018creeping\u2019 outside the home. He turned his vehicle to point his headlights on Arbery, he said, and the man tried to hide behind a portable toilet at the construction site.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">\u201cHe comes out and pulls up his shirt, and goes to reach in his pocket or waistband area,\u201d McMichael said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">\u201cIt freaked me out,\u201d said McMichael, who after that went to his house and called 911. \u201cOnce I realized what\u2019s going on, he\u2019s doing this, I\u2019m under the assumption he\u2019s armed. I jumped back into the vehicle and he runs into the house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">\u201cMcMichael told defense attorneys he moved into the neighborhood in 2018 and grew concerned about car break-ins, \u2018suspicious persons\u2019 and the theft of his pistol,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/nation\/2021\/11\/17\/ahmaud-arbery-trial-travis-mcmichael-defense-first-witnesses\/8649144002\/\">reports<\/a> USA Today of the trial. \u201cMcMichael said he would often discuss crime with neighbors, some of whom began installing surveillance cameras on their houses, and his family, including father Greg McMichael.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">On Wednesday, McMichael <a href=\"https:\/\/www.11alive.com\/video\/news\/crime\/ahmaud-arbery\/i-shot-him-travis-mcmichael-recounts-moments-surrounding-the-death-of-ahmaud-arbery-during-trial\/85-22ee2b53-1cc9-4783-b4eb-fe2841c60848\">gave<\/a> an emotional testimony, admitting on the stand, \u201cI shot him.\u201d When asked why he shot him, McMichael said, \u201cHe had my gun. The jury was shown pictures of Arbery\u2019s shirt, which was completely red, presumably from his blood, as well as close-up photos of Arbery\u2019s face.A forensic pathologist who conducted an autopsy on Arbery testified that he was shot at close range.The defense is expected to argue that the case is one of self-defense and the three men were trying to make a citizen\u2019s arrest.At the time of the shooting, a citizens arrest law in Georgia permitted people to \u201carrest\u201d a person under certain conditions if they committed a crime.
