Adams blamed Arizona secretary of state Katie Hobbs (D.) for the firing, saying Hobbs\u2014who served as minority leader in the state senate at the time\u2014&#8221;seems wholly disconnected from people of color.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This was Katie Hobbs&#8217;s decision,&#8221; Adams <a href=\"https:\/\/www.12news.com\/article\/news\/politics\/katie-hobbs-talonya-adams-arizona-senate-discrimination\/75-4f54180e-09a3-4f2e-b971-5e8c19235689?ref=exit-recirc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told<\/a> Phoenix-based 12 News. &#8220;I think she&#8217;s always been very uncomfortable with minorities. She seems wholly disconnected from people of color.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The incident comes as a major political headache for Hobbs, who has emerged as the frontrunner in Arizona&#8217;s Democratic gubernatorial primary. Following the jury&#8217;s verdict, Adams <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/jury-issues-275-million-verdict-to-fire-senate-staffer\/2021\/11\/11\/4db46e4c-4353-11ec-9404-50a28a88b9cd_story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pledged<\/a> to campaign against Hobbs, who she said is not &#8220;a person that should be bestowed the power or the authority to govern the citizens of Arizona.&#8221; Hobbs&#8217;s primary opponents also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.12news.com\/article\/news\/politics\/katie-hobbs-talonya-adams-arizona-senate-discrimination\/75-4f54180e-09a3-4f2e-b971-5e8c19235689?ref=exit-recirc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">lambasted<\/a> the Democrat after the verdict\u2014former state legislator Aaron Lieberman called the ordeal &#8220;abhorrent to all Arizonans.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The simple truth is that a jury of her peers has now concluded, twice, that Talonya Adams was fired by Katie Hobbs for asking to be paid as much by her white male counterparts,&#8221; Lieberman said in a statement. &#8220;As Democrats, it should be unacceptable from someone who wants to serve as our nominee for governor.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Hobbs&#8217;s campaign did not return a request for comment.<\/p>\n<p>In an <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.ohpredictive.com\/press-releases\/hobbs-lake-maintain-leads-in-governor-primary\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">OH Predictive Insights poll<\/a> conducted weeks before the verdict, Hobbs led Lieberman and business owner Marco Lopez by double digits, garnering 40 percent of the vote. Forty-two percent of voters, however, remain undecided, according to the poll.<\/p>\n<p>Hobbs is running to succeed Republican governor Doug Ducey, who is not seeking reelection due to term limits.
