Chrissy Houlahan (D-PA), who introduced the draft amendment, explained her rationale by&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/2021\/11\/15\/congress-might-require-women-register-draft-where-do-republicans-democrats-stand\/\">saying<\/a>, \u201cwomen have constantly had to fight for a level playing field \u2014 and this change is a step in the right direction.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Although the United States requires men aged 18 to 26 to register for the draft, no one has been drafted for military service since 1973. Congress mandated registration for the draft in 1980. One year later, the Supreme Court held that women could not register for the draft because they were not eligible for combat roles within the military.<\/p>\n<p>However, combat roles became open to women in 2015. This change in military policy was not reflected in the Selective Service System as women are currently not required to register.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>A majority of Americans disapprove of mandating draft registration for women. An&nbsp;Ipsos poll <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ipsos.com\/en-us\/news-polls\/military-draft-women-support-2021\">found<\/a> that 45 percent of Americans favor enrolling women in the draft.<\/p>\n<p>Although there is no popular support for this proposition, many Democrat politicians still support the idea.<\/p>\n<p>Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/mandatory-draft-registration-women-74f20132-e733-4c90-9c21-07dca512fba0.html?utm_source=newsletter&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=newsletter_axiossneakpeek&amp;stream=top\">told<\/a> Axios, \u201cso much of the trajectory for women in the armed services is based on what experience they\u2019re able to accrue, particularly combat experience.\u201d \u201cIt makes sense to that me that everyone should be eligible for Selective Service,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p>Many Republicans are opposed to the Democrats\u2019 effort to require women to register for the draft. Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO) is leading a Senate amendment that would strip the draft provision from the NDAA. Close to a dozen Republican senators have aided Hawley\u2019s efforts for various reasons, such as women\u2019s safety or national security implications.<\/p>\n<p>Senate Republicans opposed to the idea find themselves aligned with unusual allies from the far-left wing of the Democrat Party. Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) voted against the 2022 NDAA when it came before the Senate Armed Services Committee.<\/p>\n<p>Sen. Tom Cotton (R-AR) spoke out against the idea on Twitter, saying, \u201cOur military has welcomed women for decades and are stronger for it, but America\u2019s daughters shouldn\u2019t be drafted against their will.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Senate is currently considering the 2022 NDAA, with a decision on the draft provision expected to come before Congress goes into recess on December 11.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Women may be forced to register for the Selective Service draft if a Democrat-backed provision passes the U.S. Senate.
