Many believe that Mark Zuckerberg\u2019s company is failing to protect its most vulnerable users from manipulative marketing, choosing instead to make a show of removing a layer of targeting control from advertisers to imply that the company is looking out for its users.<\/p>\n<p>In response to the latest research, Facebook denied that it is using the tracking data that is still linked to teen users\u2019 accounts to \u201cpersonalize\u201d ads, but did not explain why it was still collecting this data. Researchers found evidence that advertising on Meta\u2019s platforms continues to be \u201coptimized\u201d for teens by algorithms and that Meta is using harvested information about children\u2019s online behavior to power its AI-driven ad targeting in order to continue to generate profits.<\/p>\n<p>But in July when Facebook announced changes to advertisers\u2019 ability to target younger users, the tech giant implied that targeting would be limited to age, gender, and locations and that it would &nbsp;\u201conly allow advertisers to target ads to people under 18 (or older in certain countries) based on their age, gender and location.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Following their research, the coalition of advocacy groups wrote in a letter:<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"20\">\n<p>\u201c[W]hile Facebook says it will no longer allow advertisers to selectively target teenagers, it appears Facebook itself continues to target teens, only now with the power of AI, replacing \u2018targeting selected by advertisers\u2019 with \u2018optimisation selected by a machine learning delivery system\u2019 does not represent a demonstrable improvement for children, despite Facebook\u2019s claims in July.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFacebook is still using the vast amount of data it collects about young people in order to determine which children are most likely to be vulnerable to a given ad.
