Councilmember Krysi Riggs was the only \u201cno\u201d vote on the measure.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat we are doing is protecting our citizens\u2019 rights as much as we can on the local level,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/oroville-california-city-council-votes-constitutional-republic-city-mandates\">said<\/a>&nbsp;Oroville Vice Mayor Scott Thomson, who requested the measure,<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn a way, we are acting as a sanctuary city for our citizens and their rights and freedoms protected by the U.S. and state constitutions,\u201d Thomson said. \u201cGavin Newsom modeled this type of declaration for us when he declared San Francisco a sanctuary city for what he believed to be overreach by the federal government against his citizens.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s just basically drawing the line,\u201d Thompson said. \u201cIt\u2019s not necessarily against one specific mandate, we\u2019re not talking about one mandate that\u2019s been pushing on us recently it\u2019s a barrage of mandates.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The resolution <a href=\"https:\/\/sacramento.cbslocal.com\/2021\/11\/05\/oroville-declares-covid-independence\/\">says<\/a> the city will not enforce \u201cany executive orders issued by the state of California or by the United States federal government that are overreaching or clearly violate our constitutionally protected rights.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The move comes as both Governor Gavin Newsom and President Joe Biden attempt to enforce pandemic measures such as vaccine and mask mandates.
