They were the direct communication of a leader\u2019s thoughts to his devoted followers, enhancing the sanctity of his authority,\u201d wrote&nbsp;Weiwei in his book.<\/p>\n<p>When asked if this passage sought to portray Trump as an authoritarian, Weiwei had a surprising answer.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\" readability=\"12.346153846154\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">PBS asked Chinese dissident, anti-communist artist Ai Weiwei about authoritarianism, hoping he would condemn Trump.<\/p>\n<p>He says Trump isn\u2019t authoritarian\u2014and calls out wokeness as authoritarianism akin to Mao\u2019s Cultural Revolution. The host is visibly upset.  <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/UctRu0Fpeq\">pic.twitter.com\/UctRu0Fpeq<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Ian Miles Cheong @ stillgray.substack.com (@stillgray) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/stillgray\/status\/1460063244328968193?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">November 15, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cIf you are authoritarian, you have to have a system supporting you,\u201d Weiwei said. \u201cYou cannot just be an authoritarian by yourself. But certainly, in the United States, with today\u2019s condition, you can easily have an authoritarian. In many ways, you\u2019re already in the authoritarian state. You just don\u2019t know it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow so?\u201d asked Hoover.<\/p>\n<p>When Weiwei said \u201cmany things\u201d in the United States resemble Mao\u2019s Cultural Revolution, he pointed the finger at \u201cpolitical correctness.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLike people trying to be unified in a certain political correctness. That is very dangerous. You want to go deeper?\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Weiwei said the dangerous political correctness stems from people who believe they are \u201cpurified by certain ideas.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B3\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cYou just think you\u2019re purified by certain ideas that you agree with it. That is posing dangers to society, to an extreme divided society,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy do you think that\u2019s happened here?\u201d Hoover asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think, for a long time, the West\u2019s material. We have much more than we needed,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd we are not caring about global situation. But, eventually, all the policies and the politics we play has to be examined under the global situation, such as China become a very powerful state. And how the West should deal with it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Weiwei asserted that the West would need to become strong within itself to take on China.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn China, we have a wisdom \u2014 to deal with anything, you have to be strong yourself.
