The email was potentially sent to thousands, according to a report.<\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThe FBI and CISA [Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency] are aware of the incident this morning involving fake emails from an @ic.fbi.gov email account,\u201d the FBI <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fbi.gov\/news\/pressrel\/press-releases\/fbi-statement-on-incident-involving-fake-emails\">explained<\/a> in a press release. <\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"gmxrevmore\" class=\"H\"><\/figure>\n<p><span>\u201cThis is an ongoing situation, and we are not able to provide any additional information at this time,\u201d the statement continues. \u201cThe impacted hardware was taken offline quickly upon discovery of the issue. We continue to encourage the public to be cautious of unknown senders and urge you to report suspicious activity to ic3.gov or <span class=\"s2\">cisa.gov<\/span>.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The email was delivered to the inboxes of \u201cpotentially thousands of people and companies,\u201d the <em>Washington Post<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/nation\/2021\/11\/14\/fbi-hack-email-cyberattack\/\">reported<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>International nonprofit, the Spamhaus Project, which<\/span><span>&nbsp;\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.spamhaus.org\/organization\/\">tracks<\/a> spam and related cyber threats such as phishing, malware and botnets,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/spamhaus\/status\/1459817319169933314\">tweeted<\/a> about the cybersecurity threat Saturday afternoon.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p><span>\u201cWe have been made aware of \u2018scary\u2019 emails sent in the last few hours that purport to come from the FBI\/DHS. While the emails are indeed being sent from infrastructure that is owned by the FBI\/DHS (the LEEP portal), our research shows that these emails *are* fake,\u201d Spamhaus\u2019s tweet reads.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThese fake warning emails are apparently being sent to addresses scraped from ARIN database. They are causing a lot of disruption because the headers are real, they really are coming from FBI infrastructure,\u201d the organization stated in a follow-up tweet. \u201cThey have no name or contact information in the .sig. Please beware!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\" readability=\"7.2611464968153\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">For anyone interested, here are the sanitised headers from the sample we got yesterday. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/KhDluiMSZa\">pic.twitter.com\/KhDluiMSZa<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Spamhaus (@spamhaus) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/spamhaus\/status\/1459817319169933314?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">November 14, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Spamhaus tweeted an image of the fake email, which alluded to \u201cextortion gang TheDarkOverlord.\u201d \u201cThe Dark Overlord\u201d is an international hacker group \u201cwhich allegedly steals data and demands big ransoms for its return,\u201d the <em>Washington Post<\/em> reported.<\/p>\n<p>Breitbart News previously <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/entertainment\/2017\/06\/05\/hacker-group-leaks-steve-harveys-abc-game-show-funderdome\/\">reported<\/a> on the group, which claimed to be behind the theft and leak of television shows from Netflix and ABC in 2017.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B3\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<p>The false email claims that Vinny Troia, who <a href=\"https:\/\/nightlion.com\/blog\/2020\/the-dark-overlord-cyber-terrorist-investigation\/\">published<\/a> an investigation on the hacker group in July 2020, was identified as the \u201cthreat actor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Troia <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/vinnytroia\/status\/1459512485845905411\">tweeted<\/a>, \u201cShould I be flattered that the kids who hacked the @FBI email servers decided to do it in my name?\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\" readability=\"7.4857142857143\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Should I be flattered that the kids who hacked the <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/FBI?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@FBI<\/a> email servers decided to do it in my name? <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/U4wti1mNNI\">https:\/\/t.co\/U4wti1mNNI<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Vinny Troia, PhD (@vinnytroia) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/vinnytroia\/status\/1459512485845905411?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">November 13, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Former Assistant Special Agent in Charge Austin Berglas of the FBI\u2019s New York Cyber Branch spoke with the <em>Washington Post<\/em> regarding Saturday\u2019s incident. The outlet noted Berglas is not involved in the ongoing investigation of the incident.<\/p>\n<p><span> \u201cIt could have just been a group or individuals looking to get some street cred to tout on underground forums,\u201d said Berglas. \u201cI would think that it would be some sort of criminal group or some sort of \u2018hacktivist\u2019 group,<i>&nbsp;<\/i>rather than a coordinated state-backed attack.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cIt could have been a lot worse,\u201d Berglas also told the <em>Post<\/em>. \u201cWhen you have ownership of a trusted dot-gov account like that, it can be weaponized and used for pretty nefarious purposes.
