The building was part of a complex at SSFL used to develop nuclear reactors.<\/p>\n<p>The explosion sent clouds of dust into the sky near residential neighborhoods of what some experts say were radioactive materials.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was absolutely flabbergasted,\u201d Dan Hirsch told the NBC Los Angeles I-Team.<\/p>\n<p>Hirsch, the former director of the Program on Environmental and Nuclear Policy at UC Santa Cruz, added, \u201cI was concerned that that radioactive cloud would migrate to where people are.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>In a press statement last month, the U.S. Department of Energy claimed that it had safely demolished the structures. It even posted a video of the demolition to YouTube:<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Energy Technology Engineering Center Sodium Pump Test Facility Demolition\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Pu9x64QPLZ4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/p>\n<p>In a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.energy.gov\/em\/articles\/final-doe-buildings-safely-come-down-etec-site\">statement<\/a> at the time, the department said:<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"10\">\n<p>The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has completed safe demolition of the final DOE-owned buildings at the Energy Technology Engineering Center (ETEC), located northwest of Los Angeles, California. Finishing the teardown of Cold War-era buildings is another important step in the Department\u2019s cleanup activities at the Santa Susana Field Laboratory (SSFL).<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The federal agency declined to speak to NBC Los Angeles on camera. Experts said that there was no need to use explosives, and that there were no dust suppression mechanisms used.<\/p>\n<p><em>Joel B.
