class=\"subheading\">Amnesty International <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org\/en\/documents\/POL40\/4969\/2021\/en\/\">accused<\/a>&nbsp;Pfizer, a U.S.-based multinational pharmaceutical giant, on Thursday of using \u201cmisleading language\u201d to suggest it has supplied poor countries with greater supplies of coronavirus vaccines than it actually has.<\/p>\n<p>Citing a November 1 Twitter <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/pfizer\/status\/1455172857877647363\">statement<\/a> by Pfizer Biopharmaceuticals Group President Angela Hwang, Amnesty noted the company \u201cagreed to supply 1.1 billion doses to low- and middle-income countries this year,\u201d referring to doses of Pfizer\u2019s coronavirus <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/coronavirus\/2019-ncov\/vaccines\/different-vaccines\/Pfizer-BioNTech.html\">vaccine<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"gmxrevmore\" class=\"H\"><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThis claim gives the impression that lower-income countries are receiving a substantial proportion of Pfizer vaccines, but the language is misleading,\u201d Amnesty claimed.<\/p>\n<p>The human rights organization said Pfizer categorized the economies of recipient countries in a way that differed from an established system <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.worldbank.org\/opendata\/new-world-bank-country-classifications-income-level-2021-2022\">used<\/a> by the World Bank.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe World Bank classifies economies for analytical purposes into four income groups: low, lower-middle, upper-middle, and high income,\u201d Amnesty noted.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cPfizer has amalgamated low, lower-middle, and upper-middle countries \u2013 over 84 percent of the global population \u2013 into one group and referred to them as \u2018low and middle-income,&#8217;\u201d Amnesty observed. \u201cWithin this very broad category, the bulk of Pfizer\u2019s doses have in fact been going to \u2018upper-middle\u2019 income countries such as Malaysia, Mexico, and Thailand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After parsing Pfizer\u2019s categorization of international economies, Amnesty claimed \u201cPfizer said it had shipped a total of two billion doses by the end of September.\u201d The organization did not specify which countries were allegedly promised the \u201ctwo billion doses,\u201d presumably of Pfizer\u2019s coronavirus vaccine, nor did it classify their economies.<\/p>\n<p>Amnesty cited a \u201cPfizer Quarterly Corporate Performance \u2013 Third Quarter 2021\u201d report to support its claim that \u201cPfizer said it had shipped a total of two billion doses by the end of September.\u201d An accompanying URL provided by Amnesty as a citation for the report <a href=\"https:\/\/investors.pfizer.com\/events-and-presentations\/event-details\/2021\/PfizerQuarterly-Corporate-Performance--Third-Quarter-2021\/default.aspx\">produced<\/a> a \u201cPage not found\u201d message for Breitbart News at press time.<\/p>\n<p>Pfizer on May 21 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/healthcare-pharmaceuticals\/pfizer-biontech-provide-1-bln-vaccines-poorer-nations-this-year-2021-05-21\/\">pledged<\/a> to provide 2 billion doses of its coronavirus vaccine to \u201cmiddle- and low-income countries\u201d not by the end of September but \u201cover next 18 months.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pfizer sent a letter to Amnesty on November 8 addressing its \u201cdistribution of doses to low-income countries,\u201d according to the human rights group.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is simply not accurate to say that no doses at all have reached these countries as of today,\u201d Pfizer\u2019s statement read.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe recognize and are concerned by the relative lower pace with which vaccines ended up reaching low-income countries, however, it is important to also acknowledge that approximately two-thirds of the 1.3 billion people living in poverty are in the middle-income countries,\u201d the letter continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLower-middle-income and upper-middle-income countries are currently home to 75 percent of the world\u2019s population and 62 percent of the world\u2019s poor,\u201d Pfizer noted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNonetheless, we anticipate that there will be a substantial increase in dose shipments through the end of the year with a particular focus on low- and lower-middle-income
