We don\u2019t want to incentivize hacking by allowing Twitter to be used as distribution for possibly illegally obtained materials.<a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/qx9rlzWH4O\">https:\/\/t.co\/qx9rlzWH4O<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Twitter Safety (@TwitterSafety) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TwitterSafety\/status\/1316525307441147907?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">October 14, 2020<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Now Twitter is allowing the spread of a&nbsp;<em>New York Times&nbsp;<\/em>story that contains privileged attorney-client information between Project Veritas and its lawyers, leaked to it by federal investigators who are using their power to intimidate and persecute journalists.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_12583922\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\" readability=\"32\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/James-OKeefe-of-Project-Veritas.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-12583922\" src=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/James-OKeefe-of-Project-Veritas.jpg\" alt=\"James O&#039;Keefe of Project Veritas\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">James O\u2019Keefe of Project Veritas ( MANDEL NGAN \/ Getty)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>As Breitbart News reported at the time, Twitter took extreme measures to suppress the Hunter Biden laptop story, locking the accounts of not only the&nbsp;<em>New York Post,&nbsp;<\/em>but also the account of White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany, and the official account of the Trump campaign.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>Via <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/tech\/2020\/10\/16\/twitter-backtracks-on-hacked-materials-policy-admits-blocking-links-is-wrong\/\">Breitbart News<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"8\">\n<p>Twitter not only censored the Post\u2019s story across its platform but also temporarily locked the accounts of White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany as well as the New York Post\u2019s official account. Notices were added to their tweets stating that they had violated Twitter\u2019s rules on prohibiting the publishing of hacked materials. Twitter also temporarily locked the account of the Trump campaign.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Twitter cited its \u201chacked materials\u201d policy to justify the blanked blocking of URLs and images of the Hunter Biden material, even though there was no evidence that it had been obtained through hacking.<\/p>\n<p>Via <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/tech\/2020\/10\/15\/twitter-cites-hacked-info-policy-to-defend-censorship-of-new-york-post-biden-bombshell\/\">Breitbart News<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"22.906313645621\">\n<p>In a statement&nbsp;<a class=\"x5l\" href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2020\/10\/14\/twitter-blocking-links-new-york-post-hunter-biden-email-story\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external\">made<\/a>&nbsp;to the Daily Caller, a Twitter spokesperson said that the decision to restrict sharing of the story was motivated by the company\u2019s \u201cHacked Materials Policy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn line with our Hacked Materials Policy, as well as our approach to blocking URLs, we are taking action to block any links to or images of the material in question on Twitter,\u201d the spokesperson said.<\/p>\n<p>However, reporters at the&nbsp;<em>New York Post<\/em>&nbsp;claim that the information was not sourced through hacking. The information contained in the report was allegedly uncovered when a man failed to retrieve his laptop from a computer repair shop in Delaware. Twitter\u2019s heavy-handed action against the&nbsp;<em>Post&nbsp;<\/em>bombshell seems inappropriate when considering the source of the story, which is not a clear cut case of hacking by any normal definition, and the gravity of the information just weeks before the election, which has led many to label the actions of Twitter and Facebook as election meddling.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>After the fact, amid pressure from Republicans including a looming senate testimony, Twitter backtracked, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/tech\/2020\/10\/16\/twitter-backtracks-on-hacked-materials-policy-admits-blocking-links-is-wrong\/\">saying blocking URLs was \u201cwrong.\u201d<\/a> By that point, the early momentum of the Hunter Biden story has already been dampened.<\/p>\n<p>Nothing the&nbsp;<em>New York Times&nbsp;<\/em>has published about Project Veritas shows any evidence of wrongdoing.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B3\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<p>All it has discovered is that Project Veritas consults with lawyers to ensure that its reporting stays within the law \u2014 something that every serious media organization does.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[T]he group has worked with its lawyers to gauge how far its deceptive reporting practices can go before running afoul of federal laws,\u201d writes the&nbsp;<em>New York Times.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cMost news organizations consult regularly with lawyers,\u201d <em>The New York Times&nbsp;<\/em>admits halfway through the piece. \u201cbut some of Project Veritas\u2019s questions for its legal team demonstrate an interest in using tactics that test the boundaries of legality and are outside of mainstream reporting techniques.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This claim is inaccurate. The principal tactic used by Project Veritas, undercover journalism, is very much in the mainstream of reporting techniques.<\/p>\n<p>The UK\u2019s Channel 4 network, <a href=\"https:\/\/yougov.co.uk\/ratings\/media\/popularity\/tv-channels\/all\">ranked as the third most popular TV channel in the country<\/a>, has run a series,&nbsp;<em>Dispatches,&nbsp;<\/em>for over three decades, which makes<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dispatches_(TV_programme)\"> extensive use of undercover reporters.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s a long history of undercover journalism in mainstream American news outlets as well&nbsp;\u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cjr.org\/united_states_project\/chicago-sun-times-mirage.php\">here\u2019s the Columbia Journalism Review praising an elaborate undercover sting by reporters at the&nbsp;<em>Chicago Sun-Times&nbsp;<\/em>in 1977.&nbsp;<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The <em>New York Times&nbsp;<\/em>has no objection to some undercover reporting as evidenced by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2017\/09\/19\/opinion\/alt-right-white-supremacy-undercover.html\">this piece<\/a> published in 2017.
