He was 80.<\/p>\n<p>The band\u2019s frontman Justin Hayward confirmed Edge\u2019s death Thursday on the group\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.moodybluestoday.com\/graeme-edge-passing\/\">website<\/a>. The cause of his death has not been revealed.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"gmxrevmore\" class=\"H\"><\/figure>\n<p>Hayward called Edge the backbone of the British rock band, which was inducted into Rock &amp; Roll Hall of Fame in 2018. The band\u2019s last album was released in 2003.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen Graeme told me he was retiring I knew that without him it couldn\u2019t be the Moody Blues anymore,\u201d Hayward said. \u201cAnd that\u2019s what happened. It\u2019s true to say that he kept the group together throughout all the years, because he loved it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In 1964, Edge co-founded the group in Birmingham, England. His drumming expertise was a key ingredient for the band\u2019s massive prog-rock hits between the 1960s-70s including \u201cNights in White Satin,\u201d \u201cTuesday Afternoon,\u201d and \u201cI\u2019m Just a Singer (In a Rock and Roll Band).\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cIn the late 1960s we became the group that Graeme always wanted it to be, and he was called upon to be a poet as well as a drummer,\u201d said Hayward, who joined The Moody Blues in 1966 with bassist John Lodge after Denny Laine\u2019s departure from the band.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe delivered that beautifully and brilliantly, while creating an atmosphere and setting that the music would never have achieved without his words,\u201d he continued. \u201cI asked Jeremy Irons to recreate them for our last tours together and it was absolutely magical.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Edge was featured in The Moody Blues\u2019 16 studio albums starting with \u201cThe Magnificent Moodies\u201d in 1965 and ending with their final album, the Christmas-themed \u201cDecember\u201d in 2003.<\/p>\n<p>Lodge paid homage to Edge on the band\u2019s Facebook page, also lauding him for his spoken word talents.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo me he was the White Eagle of the North with his beautiful poetry,\u201d he said. \u201cHis friendship, his love of life and his \u2018unique\u2019 style of drumming that was the engine room of the Moody Blues. \u2026 I will miss you Graeme.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>LOS ANGELES (AP) \u2014 Graeme Edge, a drummer and co-founder of The Moody Blues, has died.
