Harbin health officials ordered the woman to vacate her apartment and enter a state hospital to begin a mandatory quarantine period later that same day.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShortly after, a community worker carried out tests on the cats and all three cats tested positive for the virus twice, prompting authorities to take action,\u201d Britain\u2019s <em>Independent<\/em> newspaper <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/asia\/china\/china-pet-cats-killed-covid-b1929763.html\">relayed<\/a> on September 30, citing a September 28 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/china\/pet-cats-killed-chinese-city-after-covid-infection-triggering-social-media-anger-2021-09-29\/\">report<\/a> by the state-run Beijing News site.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cDespite appeals from the cat owner, the three cats were put to sleep in what has been viewed as a harsh and extreme measure by Chinese authorities to control the disease spread,\u201d according to the report.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\" readability=\"7.1347150259067\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Coronavirus: China is killing the pets of Covid-19 patients without their consent under draconian new measures <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/orQZ7w6gma\">https:\/\/t.co\/orQZ7w6gma<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 South China Morning Post (@SCMPNews) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SCMPNews\/status\/1459121776030531593?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">November 12, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cThe cats would have continued to leave viral traces in the room,\u201d an unnamed Harbin community health worker told Beijing News at the time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is probably no professional medical treatment for animals infected with the novel coronavirus,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The city health worker seemed to imply that the cats, left untreated, might have posed a reinfection risk to their owner or other residents of her apartment building. This argument contradicts official health data, which demonstrates that the risk of coronavirus transmission from pet animals to humans is extremely low.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B3\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cAt this time, there is no evidence that animals play a significant role in spreading SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19 [Chinese coronvirus disease], to people,\u201d the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention wrote in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/coronavirus\/2019-ncov\/daily-life-coping\/animals.html\">notice<\/a> posted to its website on October 5.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo far, in the whole pandemic, there have been no confirmed reports of cat to human infection,\u201d Vanessa Barrs, a professor at the City University of Hong Kong who specializes in animal health and disease, told Reuters on September 29.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt doesn\u2019t seem very realistic that cats would contaminate the environment so badly that they would be a risk for their owner to re-contract Covid-19,\u201d Rachael Tarlinton, a virology professor at the University of Nottingham, told Reuters. Tarlington noted that \u201csurfaces are not a major route of viral transmission.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/emergency-preparedness-and-response\/coronavirus-disease-2019-covid-19\/covid-19-frequently-asked-questions#:~:text=There%20is%20currently%20no%20evidence,%2C%20consult%20your%20veterinarian.\">states<\/a> on its website, \u201cBased on the information available to date, the risk of animals spreading COVID-19 to people is considered to be low.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the wake of both Harbin\u2019s and Chengdu\u2019s&nbsp;alleged cases of pet euthanasia, observers questioned \u201cif it was legal for the governments to kill pets,\u201d <em>SCMP<\/em> noted on November 12. \u201cAccording to Chinese law, wild animals or livestock infected during a pandemic can be killed.
