Maria Salazar (R), but otherwise are barely gerrymanders,\u201d Wasserman noted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy my count these maps break down 16-12 Trump-Biden, vs. 15-12 today. Is this a head fake? <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/R7zIhnXOSn\">pic.twitter.com\/R7zIhnXOSn<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Dave Wasserman (@Redistrict) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Redistrict\/status\/1458534709294768129?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">November 10, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>After the results of the 2020 Census were released, Florida was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/politics\/2021\/04\/26\/census-east-coast-midwest-lose-seats-in-house-west-south-gain-seats\/\">one of six states<\/a> that gained seats in the 435 member U.S. House of Representatives, adding one seat from its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/politics\/2021\/04\/26\/census-east-coast-midwest-lose-seats-in-house-west-south-gain-seats\/\">current 27 seats<\/a> to 28 seats that will be up for grabs in the November 2022 midterm elections.<\/p>\n<p>Of the <a href=\"https:\/\/ballotpedia.org\/United_States_congressional_delegations_from_Florida\">27 seats<\/a> from Florida in the U.S. House of Representatives in the current 117th Session of Congress, <a href=\"https:\/\/ballotpedia.org\/United_States_congressional_delegations_from_Florida\">16<\/a> are now held by Republicans, <a href=\"https:\/\/ballotpedia.org\/United_States_congressional_delegations_from_Florida\">10<\/a> are held by Democrats, and <a href=\"https:\/\/ballotpedia.org\/United_States_congressional_delegations_from_Florida\">one<\/a> is vacant. A special general election will be <a href=\"https:\/\/ballotpedia.org\/Florida%27s_20th_Congressional_District\">held on January 11, 2022<\/a> in Florida\u2019s 20th Congressional District to fill the seat formerly held by the late Rep. Alcee Hastings (D-FL).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe staff maps presented are not what we would consider extreme gerrymanders,\u201d Matthew Isbell of MCI Maps, who appears to work primarily for Democrat and left-of center groups, <a href=\"https:\/\/mcimaps.substack.com\/p\/issue-18-first-redistricting-maps\">wrote<\/a> late Wednesday.<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"12\">\n<p>For months \u2013 MONTHS \u2013 someone on twitter had said that the FL GOP have little interest in the lawsuits and depositions that plagued the 2012 redistricting maps. The possibility of a \u201cfair\u201d set of maps \u2013 aimed to avoid lawsuits \u2013 was a possibility. Seats like the 5th and 10th Congressional were \u201clocked in\u201d and wouldn\u2019t go away.<\/p>\n<p>Hmmmm\u2026. now who was the one saying that\u2026\u2026<\/p>\n<p>Well guess what \u2013 that is what\u2019s happening.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Isbell tweeted his initial reaction to one of the four plans\u2013Plan 8002\u2013for the 2022 Florida Congressional district boundaries:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\" readability=\"8.5411764705882\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Plan 8002 for Florida Congress <\/p>\n<p>Narrowly Trump at 16 districts. Seems to shore-up Dade as best they can <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/flapol?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#flapol<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/sayfje?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#sayfje<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/cBMZxTNvLy\">pic.twitter.com\/cBMZxTNvLy<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 \ud83c\udf84Florida Data Geek\ud83c\udf84 (@MappingFL) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MappingFL\/status\/1458538327930458117?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">November 10, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B3\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<p>The Florida State Senate Committee on Reapportionment staff&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.flsenate.gov\/PublishedContent\/Offices\/2020-2022\/President\/Documents\/11_10_21_Staff-Produced_Congressional_and_Senate_Maps_Now_Available.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">released a memo<\/a>&nbsp;to all members of the State Senate on Wednesday stating, \u201cIn drawing plans, staff relied on the plain language of the constitution, federal law, and existing judicial precedent to ensure that plans comply with the complex layering of federal and state standards.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSenate President Wilton Simpson (R) appointed Sen. Ray Rodrigues (R) as chair of the Senate Committee on Reapportionment on July 2, 2021,\u201d Ballotpedia <a href=\"https:\/\/ballotpedia.org\/Redistricting_in_Florida_after_the_2020_census\">reported<\/a>, adding:<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"18.978494623656\">\n<p>In Florida, both congressional and state legislative district lines are drawn by the state legislature. Congressional lines are adopted as regular legislation and are subject to gubernatorial veto. State legislative lines are passed via joint resolution and are not subject to gubernatorial veto. State legislative district maps are automatically submitted to the&nbsp;<a title=\"Florida Supreme Court\" href=\"https:\/\/ballotpedia.org\/Florida_Supreme_Court\">Florida Supreme Court<\/a>&nbsp;for approval. In the event that the court rejects the lines, the legislature is given a second chance to draft a plan. If the legislature cannot approve a state legislative redistricting plan, the state&nbsp;<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Florida Attorney General\" href=\"https:\/\/ballotpedia.org\/Florida_Attorney_General\">attorney general<\/a>&nbsp;must ask the state supreme court to draft a plan. There are no similar procedures in place for congressional districts.<\/p>\n<p>The&nbsp;<a title=\"Florida Constitution\" href=\"https:\/\/ballotpedia.org\/Florida_Constitution\">Florida Constitution<\/a>&nbsp;requires that all districts, whether congressional or state legislative, be contiguous. Also, \u201cwhere doing so does not conflict with minority rights, [districts] must be compact and utilize existing political and geographical boundaries where feasible.\u201d Districts cannot be drawn in such a way as to \u201cfavor or disfavor a political party or incumbent.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Wednesday\u2019s release of four draft redistricting maps is just the beginning of the process that will result in the determination of new boundaries for congressional and state legislative district boundaries.<\/p>\n<p>Interim committee hearings are expected to take place between now and January 11, 2022, when the Florida State Legislature comes back into session. During that 60 day session, both houses will then agree on final boundaries. While the state legislative boundaries are not subject to gubernatorial veto, the congressional district boundaries are subject to a potential veto by Gov.
