Joe Manchin (D-WV) on Friday came out against President Joe Biden\u2019s nominee for Food and Drug Administration (FDA) commissioner, Dr. Robert Califf, citing his poor handling of the&nbsp;opioid epidemic.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDr. Califf\u2019s nomination and his significant ties to the pharmaceutical industry take us backwards not forward,\u201d Manchin said in a statement. \u201cHis nomination is an insult to the many families and individuals who have had their lives changed forever as a result of addiction.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"gmxrevmore\" class=\"H\"><\/figure>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\" readability=\"7.0552763819095\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">My statement on the nomination of Dr. Robert Califf to serve as Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Commissioner: <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/vuhcx3Kcs7\">pic.twitter.com\/vuhcx3Kcs7<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Senator Joe Manchin (@Sen_JoeManchin) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Sen_JoeManchin\/status\/1459208416514260995?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">November 12, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cI urge the Administration to nominate an FDA Commissioner that understands the gravity of the prescription drug epidemic and the role of the FDA in fighting back against the greed of the pharmaceutical industry,\u201d the senator added.<\/p>\n<p>This isn\u2019t the first time that Manchin opposed Califf. The West Virginia lawmaker was one of four senators who voted against the&nbsp;cardiologist, who received pharmaceutical industry funding&nbsp;when&nbsp;<span class=\"rollover-people\" data-behavior=\"rolloverpeople\">President Barack Obama<\/span>&nbsp;nominated him in 2015. He&nbsp;was confirmed by the Senate in February 2016 and&nbsp;served until January 20, 2017.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier Friday, Biden announced Califf as his FDA pick, saying that he \u201chad strong bipartisan support in the Senate in 2016.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDr. Robert Califf is one of the most experienced clinical trialists in the country, and has the experience and expertise to lead the Food and Drug Administration during a critical time in our nation\u2019s fight to put an end to the coronavirus pandemic,\u201d the president said. \u201cAs the FDA considers many consequential decisions around vaccine approvals and more, it is mission critical that we have a steady, independent hand to guide the FDA.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sen.
