The school also reportedly insisted the training was important to \u201censure&nbsp;students can be safe and make informed choices,\u201d and pointed out an \u201cemerging&nbsp;trend\u201d of students joining the sex industry,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.co.uk\/article\/durham-university-trains-its-students-to-be-sex-workers-6wcj7ncfh\">reports<\/a> the <em>Times<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Michelle Donelan, the&nbsp;Minister of State for Universities of the United Kingdom, slammed the university for \u201clegitimizing a dangerous industry\u201d and \u201cbadly failing in their duty to protect\u201d its students.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAny university&nbsp;that does this is badly failing in their duty to protect students,\u201d&nbsp;Donelan affirmed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is right that vital support is offered to women who are being exploited,\u201d&nbsp;the minister continued. \u201cHowever, this course seeks to normalize selling sex, which has no place in our universities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe know&nbsp;this is a sector that can target young women and students and trap them in the role,\u201d Donelan added. \u201cUniversities should be focusing on raising awareness of the dangers of this and supporting women.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B3\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<p>One session \u2014 advertised as \u201can interactive course that explores the challenges student sex workers can face\u201d \u2014 was reportedly fully booked.<\/p>\n<p>Durham University and the&nbsp;Students\u2019 Union reportedly received several complaints from students who said that promoting the courses to students and staff&nbsp;called attention to the reality that prostitution was available on campus.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis could cause a real problem, making it part of university culture and making work in the sex industry a normalized activity,\u201d one student told the <em>Times<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEveryone who I\u2019ve spoken to is pretty disgusted that adult sex-worker training classes are being promoted by our own students\u2019 union,\u201d the student added.<\/p>\n<p>The move by the university comes after the University of Leicester&nbsp;in&nbsp;Leicester, England, last month introduced an online \u201ctoolkit\u201d to help students considering prostitution, notes&nbsp;<em>the Times<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The school reportedly justified the move by explaining that it is legal to engage in activities such as charging people to watch them strip, providing services to \u201csugar daddies,\u201d working on sex chat lines, and selling used underwear online for sexual gratification.<\/p>\n<p><em>You can follow Alana&nbsp;Mastrangelo on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/ARmastrangelo\">Facebook<\/a> and Twitter at <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ARmastrangelo\">@ARmastrangelo<\/a>, and on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.instagram.com\/alanamastrangelo\/\">Instagram<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Durham University in Durham, England, is reportedly offering its students online lessons on how to stay safe while working as a prostitute.
