The dossier\u2019s key claims have yet to be substantiated, and many claims have been debunked outright.<\/p>\n<p>The Post rewrote parts of stories published in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/who-is-source-d-the-man-said-to-be-behind-the-trump-russia-dossiers-most-salacious-claim\/2017\/03\/29\/379846a8-0f53-11e7-9d5a-a83e627dc120_story.html?itid=lk_inline_manual_2\">March 2017<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/sergei-millian-trump\/2019\/02\/06\/c7465a52-ec19-11e8-8679-934a2b33be52_story.html?itid=lk_inline_manual_2\">February 2019<\/a>, removing claims in the stories that the Steele dossier\u2019s \u201cSource D,\u201d who is responsible for some of the most salacious and outrageous claims in the document, is Belarusian American businessman Sergei Millian.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe newspaper\u2019s executive editor, Sally Buzbee, said The Post could no longer stand by the accuracy of those elements of the story,\u201d the Washington Post <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/lifestyle\/style\/media-washington-post-steele-dossier\/2021\/11\/12\/f7c9b770-43d5-11ec-a88e-2aa4632af69b_story.html\">reported,<\/a> in a separate story on the changes it made. \u201cThe story\u2019s headline was amended, sections identifying Millian as the source were removed, and an accompanying video summarizing the article was eliminated. An editor\u2019s note explaining the changes was added. Other stories that made the same assertion were corrected as well.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Post\u2019s decision to edit and repost the Millian stories is highly unusual in the news industry,\u201d the Post added.<\/p>\n<p>The Post\u2019s corrections come after federal authorities arrested and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/breaking-top-steele-dossier-source-arrested-charged-with-making-false-statements-to-fbi\">charged<\/a> Igor Danchenko, a key source for Steele, with lying to the FBI. Danchenko, a Russian analyst who now resides in Washington D.C., was arrested as a part of special counsel John Durham\u2019s investigation into \u201cCrossfire Hurricane,\u201d an investigation of Trump\u2019s 2016 campaign and alleged contact with Russian agents<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe June 15, 2017, false statement count alleges that Danchenko denied that he had spoken with a particular individual about material information contained in one of the Company Reports when he knew that was untrue,\u201d Durham\u2019s office said. \u201cThe March 16, 2017, May 18, 2017, Oct. 24, 2017, and Nov. 16, 2017, counts involve statements made by Danchenko on those dates to FBI agents regarding information he purportedly had received from an anonymous caller who he believed to be a particular individual, when in truth and in fact he knew that was untrue. The man said to be behind the Trump-Russia dossier\u2019s most salacious claim.\u201d It said Millian had been identified in different portions of the dossier as Source D and Source E. The article included Millian\u2019s repeated denials that he had helped Steele.The newspaper removed references to Millian as Steele\u2019s source in online and archived versions of the original articles. The stories themselves won\u2019t be retracted.
