He has been held at&nbsp;Insein Prison, which is notorious for its harsh treatment of political prisoners,\u201d The New York Times <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/11\/12\/world\/asia\/myanmar-danny-fenster.html\">reported<\/a>. He is reportedly the only known American to be held in Myanmar.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">A main issue in the case surrounded news, written by Myanmar Now, that the court decided was possibly damaging to the military, \u201cand that it violated the unlawful association law because it included comments from members of an outlawed opposition group.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cBy breaking those laws, the court said, Mr. Fenster had violated the terms of his visa, leading to his conviction on the immigration charge,\u201d the outlet added.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Lawyer Than Zaw Aung&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/11\/12\/world\/asia\/myanmar-danny-fenster.html\">said<\/a> the Myanmar court \u201cblames Danny for the news written in Myanmar Now but failed to mention which stories in Myanmar Now caused Danny to be charged.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fenster has also not worked for the outlet for over a year, a fact that was essentially ignored by the court.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Than Zaw Aung&nbsp;said Fenster started crying when he heard his sentence. \u201cHe said he never thought of spending 11 years in prison in his life,\u201d he noted.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Fenster was not going to appeal the decision due to the fact that \u201cthe orders came from above and it would not matter whether he appealed or not,\u201d according to the lawyer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The United States has been vocal against the treatment of Fenster, but the question remains as to whether or not it will take further action.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cThe ruling today represents an unjust conviction of an innocent person,\u201d a State Department spokesperson said in an email to Reuters. \u201cWe are closely monitoring Danny\u2019s situation and will continue to work for his immediate release.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Last week, State Department spokesman Ned Price <a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/6116890\/us-journalist-frontier-myanmar-danny-fenster\/\">said<\/a>, \u201cWe remain deeply concerned over the continued detention of Danny Fenster. Again, the regime should take the prudent step of releasing him now.\u201dAccording to The Times, Fenster could be facing additional time in jail at some point.\u00a0\u201cTwo new charges of terrorism and sedition\u00a0were filed against him this week, each carrying a maximum sentence of 20 years.
