It combines a digital render of mountains with a photo of the Orion Nebula.<\/p>\n<p><span><strong>Fact Check:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The northern lights, also known as the aurora borealis, is a natural phenomenon resulting from \u201ccollisions between gaseous particles in the Earth\u2019s atmosphere with charged particles released from the sun\u2019s atmosphere,\u201d according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.northernlightscentre.ca\/northernlights.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Northern Lights Centre<\/a>. They can take the form of patterns such as \u201crippling curtains, pulsating globs, traveling pulses, or steady glows,\u201d the Library of Congress <a href=\"https:\/\/www.loc.gov\/everyday-mysteries\/item\/what-are-the-northern-lights\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">explains<\/a> in an article.<\/p>\n<p>Over 27,000 Facebook users have shared an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/Asolotraveler3\/photos\/a.2048374201896554\/4584386421628640\/?type=3&amp;theater\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">image<\/a> purportedly depicting the northern lights above an Alaskan mountain range. That image, however, is actually a piece of digital artwork. The DeviantArt user Jeddaka uploaded the piece, titled \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.deviantart.com\/jeddaka\/art\/Through-the-Clouds-Night-128079899\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Through the Clouds, Night<\/a>,\u201d to the art-sharing website in 2009.<\/p>\n<p>In the caption on DeviantArt, the artist described the piece as \u201cphotoshop for postwork\u201d and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.deviantart.com\/jeddaka\/art\/Through-the-Clouds-128009150\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">linked<\/a> to a digital \u201cdaytime render\u201d of the same mountains that appear in the image being shared on Facebook. The color phenomenon visible in the sky in the piece comes from a <a href=\"https:\/\/commons.wikimedia.org\/wiki\/File:Orion.nebula.arp.750pix.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">photo<\/a> of the Orion Nebula that can be found on Wikimedia Commons.
