The backlash was part of a larger trend among left-wing activists to pressure Hollywood to embrace so-called \u201cauthentic\u201d casting, which would prevent white actors from playing Latino roles and heterosexual actors from playing gay roles.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"gmxrevmore\" class=\"H\"><\/figure>\n<p>In the movie, which Amazon will release in December, Oscar-winner Javier Bardem plays Desi Arnaz opposite Nicole Kidman as Lucille Ball. The movie follows the couple\u2019s relationship during the making of the hit CBS sitcom <em>I Love Lucy<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>In an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-features\/aaron-sorkin-nicole-kidman-lucille-ball-javier-bardem-being-the-ricardos-interview-1235045467\/\">interview<\/a> with <em>The Hollywood Reporter<\/em>, Aaron Sorkin defended the casting of Bardem when asked if he was sensitive to authentic casting.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe know when we\u2019re being demeaning. We know that Black face is demeaning because of its historical context because you\u2019re making ridiculous cartoon caricatures out of people,\u201d he replied. \u201cWe know that Mickey Rooney with the silly piece in&nbsp;<i>Breakfast at Tiffany\u2019s<\/i>&nbsp;and that makeup doing silly Japanese speak, we know that\u2019s demeaning. This is not, I felt.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>He continued: \u201cHaving an actor who was born in Spain playing a character who was born in Cuba was not demeaning. And it wasn\u2019t just the casting consultant who agreed, Lucy and Desi\u2019s Cuban American daughter didn\u2019t have a problem with it. But I don\u2019t want to use the casting consultant as cover,\u201d Sorkin told the <em>Reporter<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want to tell you my opinion on this and I stand by it, which is this: Spanish and Cuban aren\u2019t actable, okay? They\u2019re not actable. By the way, neither are straight and gay. Because I know there\u2019s a small movement underway that only gay actors should play gay characters. Gay and straight aren\u2019t actable.
