WNBA unable to ‘substantiate’ claims of racism in its investigation

Claims of bigotry, discrimination, and racist fan behavior after a WNBA game between the Indiana Fever and Chicago Sky earlier this month were not verifiable.

The game was played at Gainbridge Fieldhouse and featured a contentious matchup between league rivals Caitlin Clark of the Fever and Angel Reese of the Sky on May 17. After a play in the game’s third quarter in which Clark fouled the Chicago Sky forward. Reese objected to Clark’s rough penalty, aggressively responded after the play, and verbally lashed out at the Fever’s star player.

After the game, an accusation surfaced that someone or some people directed racist comments toward Reese. The WNBA could not substantiate those accusations after an investigation. The women’s basketball league released a statement this week about its conclusion.

“We have investigated the report of racist fan behavior in the vicinity of the court during the May 17, 2025 Chicago Sky at Indiana Fever game,” read the WNBA statement. “Based on information gathered to date, including from relevant fans, team and arena staff, as well as audio and video review of the game, we have not substantiated it.”

“The WNBA is committed to fostering a safe and inclusive environment for everyone and will continue to be vigilant in enforcing our fan code of conduct.”

Before her game this week against the Phoenix Mercury, Reese was asked about the investigation concluding that the claims were not substantiated. ESPN reported that Reese declined to talk about it and said she was “focused on the game today.”

Chicago Sky head coach Tyler Marsh repeated Reese’s sentiments and encouraged all to remain focused on the games.

“We appreciate the investigation being done and we hope that the league continues to make the steps necessary moving forward to ensure a safe environment for everyone, all players included,” Marsh said. “But tonight, the focus is on the game.”

The Indiana Fever released a statement about the conclusion of the investigation.

“We appreciate the swift and thorough process undertaken by the WNBA to investigate these allegations, which were not substantiated,” read the team’s statement. “At Gainbridge Fieldhouse, we are committed to providing the best possible basketball experience for players and fans where hate speech has absolutely no place.”
