Steve Witkoff ends Doha ceasefire talks early after ‘selfish’ Hamas proposal

President Donald Trump’s Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff ended the Israel-Hamas ceasefire and hostage talks early in Doha, Qatar, on Thursday, accusing the Palestinian terrorist group of acting selfishly during this week’s negotiations.

“We have decided to bring our team home from Doha for consultations after the latest response from Hamas, which clearly shows a lack of desire to reach a ceasefire in Gaza,” Witkoff announced.

“While the mediators have made a great effort, Hamas does not appear to be coordinated or acting in good faith,” he said. “We will now consider alternative options to bring the hostages home and try to create a more stable environment for the people of Gaza. It is a shame that Hamas has acted in this selfish way. We are resolute in seeking an end to this conflict and a permanent peace in Gaza.”

It remains unclear what “alternative options” the Trump administration might pursue to return the remaining Israeli hostages and end the war in Gaza.

Witkoff traveled to Europe on Wednesday to discuss a ceasefire deal. The latest talks, which began July 6, have been delayed for weeks.

Both the United States and Israel recalled their negotiating teams from the capital of Qatar.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office said its negotiating team would “continue consultations” from home.

“We appreciate the efforts of mediators Qatar and Egypt and the efforts of Witkoff to bring about a breakthrough in the talks,” the office added.

The new development comes nearly two years after Israel waged war on Hamas in response to the terrorist group’s large-scale 2023 attack on the Jewish state. Israel and Hamas struck a ceasefire agreement earlier this year before the conflict persisted.
