Whoopi explodes over affirmative action ruling: ‘Why the fear?’

Whoopi Goldberg Blames “The View” Audience for Verbal Slip

Whoopi Goldberg, one of the cohosts on ABC’s “The View,” recently sparked a lively debate about race-based college admissions policies. In a passionate discussion, Goldberg argued that these policies were acceptable as long as they benefitted the correct races.

Goldberg’s comments came just hours after the Supreme Court’s decision to effectively end affirmative action in the college admissions process. She boldly stated that the only reason people would oppose such policies is if they feared allowing too many black and brown Americans to succeed in higher education.

Goldberg began her argument by referencing the Supreme Court’s ruling and the Equal Protection Clause of the 14th Amendment. However, she quickly shifted her stance, explaining why colleges should not have to treat people equally if they were favoring certain races.

“Now, the 14th Amendment is supposed to promise equal protection,” Goldberg stated. “But if everyone was actually treated equally, we wouldn’t have had to put in affirmative action. We wouldn’t have had to do it.”

Goldberg then directed her attention to Edward Blum and Abigail Fisher, who have been advocating for the end of affirmative action. Accusing them, she questioned why they were scared of the idea of equal opportunities for all races.

The conversation also touched on legacy admissions policies, with the panel mostly agreeing that they should be abolished. Joy Behar, the first in her family to attend college, shared her perspective as someone without parents who had prestigious degrees.

Alyssa Farah Griffin, the panel’s lone Republican, argued that diversity should be considered in more areas than just race. She used the example of a poor white child from Appalachia who may need more consideration than a wealthy black student with highly educated parents.

Sunny Hostin disagreed, asserting that due to the country’s history of slavery, black students should be given preference over white students, even if the white students come from less privileged backgrounds.
