White House working on govt strategy for ransomware attacks

The White House has announced they are working on a government-wide strategy to respond to ransomware attacks. Joe Biden addressed the issue on Tuesday after a cyber attack targeted U.S. IT software company Kaseya over the weekend.
More than a thousand businesses were affected worldwide in the attack carried out by Russian-linked hackers. Biden did not comment on whether the attack will warrant retaliation.

“I received an update from our national security team this morning. It appears to have caused minimal damage to U.S. businesses, but we’re still gathering information to the full extent of the attack and I’m gonna have more to say about this in the next several days,” said Biden. “We’re getting more details and information.”
The hackers are demanding $70 million to restore businesses’ data. Meanwhile, the White House strategy will reportedly deter companies from paying out ransoms to cybercriminals.
