White House commits to overturning pride flag ban included in spending bill

White House ⁤Pledges to Reverse Ban on LGBT Pride Flags at U.S. Embassies

President Biden’s Stance

The White⁢ House has⁢ vowed to‍ repeal the ban on most non-U.S. flags flying above American⁢ embassies,⁢ particularly targeting the prohibition of LGBT pride flags.⁤ President Joe Biden strongly opposes this move, deeming ⁣it⁤ as an abuse of the essential government operations process.

President Biden believes it was inappropriate to abuse⁣ the process that was⁣ essential to keep the ‌government open by including this policy targeting LGBTQI+ Americans,” the ‍White House stated.

The administration ⁣emphasized that the ‌ban⁤ will not affect the LGBTQI+ community’s ability to serve openly⁤ in embassies or ‍celebrate pride. Despite the setback,⁢ efforts are underway to collaborate with Congress⁢ for a potential repeal.

During⁣ the Obama administration, some U.S.⁣ embassies proudly displayed pride flags. Unfortunately, this practice was⁣ halted when Donald Trump assumed office. Subsequently, the Biden⁣ administration‌ reinstated the policy upon‍ taking office.

Now, the ban is entrenched ⁤in‍ U.S. law ⁣following the passage ⁤of the new spending‌ bill. Biden and his team⁤ successfully thwarted numerous similar measures targeting the LGBTQI+ community that were omitted‌ from ⁢the final legislation.

“We were⁤ successful in‌ defeating 50-plus other policy‌ riders attacking the LGBTQI+⁤ community ⁤that Congressional Republicans attempted to insert into the ⁣legislation,” ‌the statement ‍asserted. ⁤The President remains unwavering in his commitment to⁣ champion LGBTQI+ equality domestically and internationally.

The ban extends beyond ‍LGBT flags and restricts most flags other than the American flag from being displayed atop ⁤U.S. embassies. However, it does not⁣ prohibit⁣ the display of ⁤other flags elsewhere on⁢ embassy premises.

The ⁣approved flags that can ⁣still be flown over U.S. embassies include the U.S. flag, the⁢ POW/MIA flag, the Hostage and ‍Wrongful Detainee⁤ flag, state flags, Indian Tribal government flags, officially ⁣branded flags of U.S. agencies, and the sovereign flags of other nations.
