In a recent discussion,Keith Kellogg, the White House special envoy to Ukraine, expressed that former President Donald Trump is uniquely positioned to broker peace between Russia and Ukraine. Kellogg highlighted that negotiations would be essential to resolving the ongoing conflict, which he deemed impractical to end through violence alone. Although Trump has shown dissatisfaction with Russian President Vladimir Putin’s recent aggressive actions,Kellogg believes that Trump’s ability to maintain a negotiating stance is crucial. He acknowledged that neither side may fully endorse the proposed compromises, which he asserted might indicate a better path forward. additionally, Kellogg noted that both the U.S.and Ukraine have outlined their terms for peace, with the next step involving the integration of these proposals to facilitate negotiations.
White House special envoy to Ukraine says Trump’s job in achieving peace is ‘not easy’
White House special envoy to Ukraine Keith Kellogg argued on Tuesday that President Donald Trump is the “only guy” who can bring peace between Russia and Ukraine, suggesting bringing an end to the war comes down to “negotiation.”
Trump has expressed frustration with Russia’s recent large-scale missile and drone attacks on Ukraine, stating he is “not happy” with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Kellogg, a retired lieutenant general in the U.S. Army, assessed that Trump’s ire at Putin is “understandable.” He called Russia’s attack against Kyiv a “clear violation” of the 1977 Geneva Protocol, which was intended to prevent “indiscriminate killing” of civilians.
Amid the frustrations, however, Kellogg suggested Trump deserves “full credit” for his current efforts to achieve peace, adding that the administration has a “22-point plan” on what steps to take next.
“And frankly, we think it’s a good plan because neither side really likes it. I think you make progress when both sides don’t like it, and it’s gone well,” Kellogg said on Fox News’s Fox & Friends. “So we’re pretty confident there, and when you ask what he needs to do, I think he needs to keep at it. It’s frustrating, I know that, but the only guy that can do this is President Trump. I really believe that.”
“It’s not going to be easy,” Kellogg continued. “Negotiations are never easy, but there’s nowhere this war is going to end through violence, through killing of soldiers on either side; it’s going to come down to negotiation, that’s where you have to be.”
Regarding what needs to happen next, Kellogg said the Russians told Trump that they are working on a “memorandum,” which he explained was a “term sheet” on what Russia wants for peace. Kellogg added that the United States has already received Ukraine’s terms for peace, and the next step would be finding a way to merge them with Russia’s so that peace can be reached between the two countries.
AS TRUMP FUMES, WAR IN UKRAINE TAKES A DEADLY TURN
Following Russia’s attack on Kyiv, European allies of Ukraine have lifted restrictions on the country firing long-range missiles against Russia. The change in policy marks the first time Europe has supported Ukraine’s authorized use of these weapons since the war began in February 2022.
On Monday, Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-IA) urged Trump to act against Russia in the wake of its most recent strike on Ukraine, writing on X that he has “had enuf” of Putin killing innocents. It comes after Trump said on Sunday that he would “absolutely” consider sanctions against Russia.
