The White House Confirms President Joe Biden’s Planned Visit to East Palestine, Ohio

The White House has officially announced that President Joe Biden intends to visit East Palestine, Ohio, despite the Norfolk Southern train derailment disaster that occurred five months ago.

During a press briefing, White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre confirmed the President’s plans but did not provide a specific date for the visit. She mentioned that Biden has been extensively traveling to various locations in recent weeks and months.

The Norfolk Southern freight train derailed on February 3, causing significant concerns among the residents of East Palestine, a small town near Ohio’s border with Pennsylvania. The controlled burn of toxic chemicals at the crash site, aimed at preventing a larger explosion, raised health and environmental issues.

Mayor Trent Conaway expressed disappointment when President Biden visited Ukraine instead of their community, stating that it felt like a “slap in the face” and conveyed a lack of concern for their situation. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg eventually visited the derailment area, following former President Donald Trump’s visit to East Palestine.

In early March, President Biden assured that he would visit East Palestine “at some point.” However, no specific date has been announced yet.

During the press briefing, Jean-Pierre also mentioned that Ohio Governor Mike DeWine has requested a major disaster declaration, which is currently under review by the Federal Emergency Management Agency. She emphasized that Norfolk Southern has been ordered by the Environmental Protection Agency to cover the cleanup costs, ensuring that taxpayers are not burdened.
