White House Deputy Press Secretary Tests Positive for COVID

Karine Jean-Pierre, deputy press secretary to President Joe Biden, has tested positive for COVID-19 after returning from Belgium and Poland with President Joe Biden, she revealed Sunday evening.

Jean-Pierre said in a statement that she tested positive for after taking a PCR test earlier that afternoon after returning from the trip, where she was filling in for her boss, White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki. Psaki tested positive for COVID-19 ahead of the Europe visit, leaving her unable to go.

“I last saw the president during a socially distanced meeting yesterday, and the president is not considered a close contact as defined by CDC guidance,” she said about the commander-in-chief’s exposure.

Jean-Pierre said her symptoms were mild and that she would work from home for the next five days. She pledged to not return to the office until she tested negative.

Psaki revealed she had tested positive for COVID-19 the day before Biden flew to Brussels, Belgium for high-level talks with NATO, the G7, and the European Union amid Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The U.S. president then traveled to Rzeszow and Warsaw, Poland, to meet with Polish President Andrzej Duda, U.S. troops, and Ukrainian refugees escaping the conflict.

This was not the first time Psaki missed an international trip with Biden. She was unable to travel to Italy and the United Kingdom last year after contracting COVID-19 from a family member.
