White House says it needs Congress approval to help New York with migrant crisis.
The White House Responds to Gov. Hochul’s Plea for Assistance with New York’s Migrant Crisis
The White House has responded to Gov. Kathy Hochul’s plea for President Joe Biden’s assistance with New York’s migrant crisis, highlighting the limitations they face without congressional authorization.
A Major Influx of Migrants in New York City
New York City has experienced a significant influx of migrants, with over 100,000 individuals arriving from the southern border of the United States since the spring of 2022. Recognizing the strain this has placed on the city, Gov. Hochul requested federal assistance to help with the associated costs.
“[This administration] has worked to identify ways to improve efficiencies and maximize the resources the federal government can provide to communities across the country to support the flow of migrants,” the spokesperson told CNN. “We will continue to partner with communities across the country to ensure they can receive the support they need. Only Congress can provide additional funding for these efforts, which this Administration has already requested, and only Congress can fix the broken immigration system.”
The federal government has already contributed $145 million in direct funding to address New York’s migrant crisis. Additionally, lodging for asylum seekers has been approved at Floyd Bennett Field, and the Department of Homeland Security has sent an assessment team to collaborate with state and local officials.
Hochul’s Request for Reimbursement and Resources
Gov. Hochul specifically requested reimbursement and resources for transportation, food, and lodging for the migrants. She also emphasized the need for faster approval of work authorizations, as red tape from the federal government has hindered the migrants’ ability to find employment.
“For over a year, I have called for federal assistance and support for New York as we manage the unprecedented number of asylum seekers arriving in our state,” Hochul said in a statement. “New York cannot continue to do this on its own. It is past time for President Biden to take action and provide New York with the aid needed to continue managing this ongoing crisis.”
Mayor Eric Adams of New York City has estimated that the cost of the migrant crisis could reach $12 billion by 2025 if the flow of immigrants remains the same. While Gov. Hochul did not provide a specific price tag in her request, the state has already allocated over $1.5 billion to the city and may be required to contribute an additional $4.5 billion next year based on current estimates.
