Location of Russian general still unknown after Prigozhin rebellion.

The Mystery of the Missing Russian General

The deputy commander of Russian troops in Ukraine has vanished without a trace following the failed rebellion by the Wagner Group against top military leaders. General Sergei Surovikin, who had prior knowledge of the planned coup, has not been seen since the incident. Speculation about his possible involvement and current whereabouts continues to swirl.

Unconfirmed Reports and Mysterious Disappearances

The United Kingdom’s Defense Ministry reported that Surovikin has not made any public appearances since the mutiny, but they could not confirm reports of his arrest. Adding to the intrigue, Russian Deputy Defense Minister Col. Gen. Yunus-bek Yevkurov also missed a televised appearance and was seen conversing with the founder of the paramilitary group, Yevgeny Prigozhin, during the group’s brief seizure of Rostov-on-Don.

A Coup Foiled and Questions Raised

Prigozhin’s plan was to apprehend Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu and Gen. Valery Gerasimov, whom he had publicly criticized for months. However, Russian intelligence officials discovered the plot, forcing Prigozhin to accelerate his timeline. The success of the Wagner forces in the initial hours of the coup, despite authorities’ prior knowledge, has raised doubts about the effectiveness of Russia’s military.

An Escalation of Verbal Battles

This coup attempt was the culmination of a long-standing verbal battle between Prigozhin and the military leaders. He accused Shoigu and Gerasimov of treason and withholding crucial military resources from his forces, even as they fought on the front lines of the conflict in Ukraine.

While some U.S. officials see this incident as evidence of “cracks” within Putin’s inner circle, others view it as an internal matter for Russia. The mystery surrounding General Surovikin’s disappearance only adds to the intrigue surrounding this unfolding situation.
