Authorities previously described the suspect as a male of “college age” who “blended in well” on campus.

Here is how the shooting and subsequent manhunt unfolded.

Before the assassination

Authorities said Robinson arrived on campus at 8:29 a.m. local time on Wednesday in a gray Dodge Challenger. He was seen on video wearing a plain maroon T-shirt, light-colored shorts, a black hat with a white logo, and light-colored shoes. Gov. Spencer Cox (R-UT) said when investigators encountered Robinson, his clothing was “consistent” with that seen on video.

The suspect prepared to get into position on the rooftop of a campus building around 11:52 a.m. local time. Kirk’s speaking event began at noon.

Shots fired

A single shot was fired at 12:23 p.m. local time when an attendee asked Kirk a question about mass shootings committed by transgender people. Seconds after, Kirk fell sideways in his chair to the ground. His team rushed to his aid to stop the bleeding and proceeded to carry him into a vehicle en route to a nearby hospital.

Around 12:27 p.m. local time, an emergency dispatch reported by CBS News described the suspect as wearing all-black tactical gear and carrying a bolt-action rifle. He changed clothes on the roof before the shooting, and then changed back to his previous outfit after allegedly killing Kirk and leaving the roof, Cox said.

Robinson allegedly fired the shot from an elevated position on a rooftop of a campus building about 200 yards away from Kirk’s position. The gunman then fled the scene to a nearby neighborhood. Authorities said Thursday that they found a rifle left behind in a wooded area.

Within 16 minutes of the shooting, the FBI arrived on campus to help state and local authorities secure the scene.

In the hours after the shooting, the FBI and Utah police announced two people had been detained and subsequently released. Neither was the gunman.

Kirk announced dead

President Donald Trump later announced Kirk had died.

“The Great, and even Legendary, Charlie Kirk, is dead,” he posted on Truth Social at 2:40 p.m. local time. “No one understood or had the Heart of the Youth in the United States of America better than Charlie. He was loved and admired by ALL, especially me, and now, he is no longer with us. Melania and my Sympathies go out to his beautiful wife Erika, and family. Charlie, we love you!”

Manhunt for the assassin begins

Prior to Robinson’s arrest, investigators reviewed doorbell footage belonging to homes in the nearby neighborhood in which the alleged assassin was seen following the shooting. One particular homeowner said his home surveillance camera may have recorded part of Robinson’s escape.

The person said the person of interest ran through neighbors’ backyards immediately after the shooting, according to Fox News. The properties were separated from the university by a fence.

Robinson fled to Washington County, where his parents live, and was soon arrested. Authorities said they were able to track his car from the university back to the city of Washington. He was not a student at Utah Valley University.

On Thursday, the FBI’s Salt Lake City Field Office released photos of the suspect and offered a cash reward worth up to $100,000 for information leading to the identification and arrest of the shooter.

FBI Director Kash Patel and Deputy Director Dan Bongino arrived on the scene around 5:30 p.m. local time Thursday before giving a press conference hours later. New photos and a video of the suspect were released to the public.

Law enforcement officers reportedly learned of the alleged shooter’s identity when Robinson’s father turned him in. Trump announced the news during his 8 a.m. interview with Fox & Friends on Friday, saying the father told “a minister who was involved with law enforcement.” Trump did not identify the suspect.

Robinson was taken into custody by the U.S. Marshals Service in St. George, Utah, around 10 p.m. local time Thursday. The city is located over 260 miles southwest of Utah Valley University. The manhunt lasted under 36 hours.

Cox said the state is pursuing the death penalty for the now-identified shooter. Trump backed the idea.

“I hope he’s going to be found guilty, and I hope he gets the death penalty,” the president said. “What he did — Charlie Kirk was the finest person, and he didn’t deserve this.”
