VIDEO: NY Governor Criticizes Republicans, Urges Fourfold Increase in Border Patrol
New York Governor Calls for Stronger Border Protections, Criticizes Republicans
New York Governor Kathy Hochul (D.) took a firm stance on Sunday, demanding increased border protections and accusing Republicans in Congress of being soft on immigration. In a passionate interview on CBS, Hochul expressed her frustration with the current state of border security, emphasizing the need for stricter controls.
“Shame on Speaker McCarthy and the Republicans in Congress,” Hochul said. “We want them to have a limit on who can come across the border. It is too open right now. People coming from all over the world are finding their way through, simply saying they need asylum, and the majority of them seem to be ending up in the streets of New York.”
Hochul highlighted the welcoming nature of New Yorkers and echoed a statement from the White House, claiming that proposed Republican budget cuts would result in a significant reduction in Customs and Border Protection agents.
“We are always so proud of the fact that New York has the Statue of Liberty in our harbor. We are one of the most diverse places on earth because of our welcoming nature,” Hochul passionately stated. “It’s in our DNA to welcome immigrants, but there has to be some limits in place, and Congress has to put more controls at the border, and not in this budget threat, shutdown threat—talk about eliminating positions for Border Patrol when we actually need to double or quadruple those numbers. So get back to work and do your jobs.”
Democrats have been quick to blame Republicans for the escalating crisis at the southern border. President Joe Biden previously accused “MAGA Republicans” of undermining border security during his predecessor’s term.
Interestingly, Democrats have also shifted their stance on illegal migrants attempting to enter the United States.
While Hochul called for stronger border security recently and advised immigrants to “go somewhere else,” she previously emphasized that the majority of these individuals were seeking legal humanitarian relief and had the right to seek asylum in the country.
In a nod to the Statue of Liberty, Hochul quoted the iconic poem inscribed on the monument, expressing her belief in welcoming migrants.
“As you know, the Statue of Liberty is inscribed. It says, give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses, yearning to be free,” Hochul stated. “That statement encapsulates our values. We want people to come here, despite where they came from or despite the circumstances that drove them into this country, into this state. We say you are welcome here. You’re welcome with open arms, and we’ll work to keep you safe.”
New York City Mayor Eric Adams (D.) has also experienced a change in rhetoric. While campaigning, he promised to maintain New York City as a sanctuary city. However, he recently expressed concerns that the influx of migrants would have a detrimental impact on the city.
What are the potential consequences of unchecked immigration on communities and resources?
And inclusive cities in the world,” Hochul expressed. “But that does not mean we can neglect the security and safety of our citizens. We need stronger border protections to ensure that those who enter our country are doing so legally and for the right reasons.”
The governor’s comments come amidst an ongoing debate over immigration reform and border security in the United States. While Republicans have advocated for stricter immigration policies and stronger border controls, Democrats have pushed for a more lenient approach, emphasizing humanitarian concerns and the need for comprehensive immigration reform.
Hochul’s strong stance on stronger border protections aligns with the Biden administration’s agenda, which has called for a balance between enforcement and enhancing legal pathways for immigration. The governor’s criticism of Republicans in Congress reflects the partisan divide on the issue, as Democrats and Republicans continue to clash over the best approach to address the current immigration challenges.
In response to Hochul’s comments, Republican leaders have defended their position and criticized the Biden administration’s handling of the border crisis. House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy accused Democrats of ignoring the needs of border agents and failing to address the root causes of the immigration surge.
Despite the political disagreements, it is evident that the issue of border security is of utmost importance to states like New York, which receive a significant number of undocumented immigrants. The governor’s call for stronger border protections reflects the concerns of many New Yorkers who are worried about the impact of unchecked immigration on their communities and resources.
The debate over immigration and border security is likely to continue, with both sides proposing different solutions and engaging in heated discussions. It is crucial for policymakers to consider the various aspects of the issue and work towards a comprehensive and effective approach that balances security and compassion.
As Governor Hochul emphasizes the need for stronger border protections, it is essential for politicians on both sides of the aisle to engage in productive dialogue and find common ground to address the challenges of immigration in a manner that upholds the principles of justice, fairness, and national security.
