WATCH: The awkward moment Noem takes the stage shortly after being fired by Trump
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem took to the podium to speak at a Tennessee event on law enforcement just minutes after President Donald Trump announced her firing on Truth Social.
Noem took questions from the Nashville crowd gathered for the 2 p.m. Sergeant Benevolent Association Major Cities Conference, though no reporters asked about her firing. Noem’s speech touched on cooperation between local and federal law enforcement.
Trump’s firing of Noem is effective March 31. He tapped Sen. Markwayne Mullin (R-OK) as Noem’s replacement. The president designated Noem as special envoy for the new project titled Shield of the Americas, which he said will oversee “our new Security Initiative in the Western Hemisphere we are announcing on Saturday in Doral, Florida.”
DEMOCRATS REACT TO NOEM’S DHS OUSTER AND MARKWAYNE MULLIN’S NOMINATION
“Thank you @POTUS Trump for appointing me as the Special Envoy for the Shield of the Americas,” Noem wrote on X after her Nashville event. “@SecRubio and @SecWar are incredible leaders and I look forward to working with them closely to dismantle cartels that have poured drugs into our nation and killed our children and grandchildren.
“The Western Hemisphere is absolutely critical for U.S. security. In this new role, I will be able to build on the partnerships and national security expertise, I forged over the last 13 months as Secretary of Homeland Security,” Noem said.
