French President Emmanuel Macron delivered a speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos and has been drawn into U.S.-Europe tensions over President Donald Trump’s reported interest in Greenland. Macron urged European leaders to consider a “trade bazooka” – stronger trade measures – in response to Trump’s threats of tariffs on countries that oppose U.S. moves on Greenland. The Greenland dispute and possible tariffs (including a threatened 200% levy on French wine and champagne) have become focal points as world leaders meet in Davos. Trump later shared private messages from Macron in which Macron praised cooperation on Syria and Iran but said, “I do not understand what you are doing on Greenland,” while inviting collaboration.

WHAT IS EUROPE’S ‘TRADE BAZOOKA’ BEING FLOATED AS AN ANSWER TO TRUMP’S GREENLAND THREATS?
Macron launched to the center of the American foreign policy conversation on Monday as he urged European leaders to use the “trade bazooka” in response to President Donald Trump’s threatened tariffs on European countries that disagree with his aims of acquiring Greenland.
The future of the Arctic island, now a territory of Denmark, is largely expected to be a hot topic among the major world leaders gathered in Davos. As Trump boarded Air Force One overnight, he threatened Macron with a 200% tariff on French wines and champagnes if Macron was hostile to joining his Board of Peace. Trump later posted friendly private messages from Macron on his Truth Social platform, in which the French president invited him to dinner.
“My friend, We are totally in line on Syria. We can do great things on Iran. I do not understand what you are doing on Greenland,” Macron said in the message. “Let us try to build great things.”
