French President Emmanuel Macron is slated to speak at the World Economic Forum in Davos. He has pushed European leaders to consider using a so‑called “trade bazooka” – an anti‑coercion trade response – after President Donald Trump threatened tariffs on countries that oppose U.S. efforts to acquire Greenland. The spat intensified when Trump warned of a possible 200% tariff on French wines and champagnes and later shared private messages from Macron, who wrote that while the two are aligned on Syria and could cooperate on Iran, “I do not understand what you are doing on Greenland.” Greenland and arctic policy are expected to be a key topic among leaders in Davos.

WHAT IS EUROPE’S ‘TRADE BAZOOKA’ BEING FLOATED AS AN ANSWER TO TRUMP’S GREENLAND THREATS?
Macron launched to the center of the American foreign policy conversation on Monday as he urged European leaders to use the “trade bazooka” in response to President Donald Trump’s threatened tariffs on European countries that disagree with his aims of acquiring Greenland.
The future of the Arctic island, now a territory of Denmark, is largely expected to be a hot topic among the major world leaders gathered in Davos. As Trump boarded Air Force One overnight, he threatened Macron with a 200% tariff on French wines and champagnes if Macron was hostile to joining his Board of Peace. Trump later posted friendly private messages from Macron on his Truth Social platform, in which the French president invited him to dinner.
“My friend, We are totally in line on Syria. We can do great things on Iran. I do not understand what you are doing on Greenland,” Macron said in the message. “Let us try to build great things.”
