WATCH: Elton John honors Queen Elizabeth II with dedicated song

Elton John honored Queen Elizabeth II in song and remembered her “bloody hard” work over the course of her reign.

During his Thursday night show in Toronto, the musician paid tribute to the late monarch following the announcement of her death at Balmoral Castle in Scotland earlier in the day.

“She was an inspiring presence to be around,” John said while photos of the late queen were displayed on large screens. “She led the country through some of our greatest and darkest moments with grace and decency and genuine caring and warmth.”

“I’m 75, and she’s been with me all my life, and I feel very sad that she won’t be with me anymore, but I’m glad she’s at peace,” the musician said. “I’m glad she’s at rest, and she deserves it. She worked bloody hard. I send my love to her family and her loved ones, and she will be missed. But her spirit lives on. And we’ll celebrate her life tonight with music.”

The musician then sang “Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me” and dedicated it to the queen.

After Elizabeth’s death was announced Thursday, John also wrote on Instagram that he would “dearly miss her.”

John met the queen many times over the course of his career, including when he was knighted by the British monarch in 1998 in recognition of his philanthropy and work in music, according to Billboard.
