Witnessing a 5-year-old case unfold on police bodycam footage is nothing short of gripping.
The decades-long-coma–patient-mysteriously-giving-birth-draws-major-shock-disbelief-from-caregivers/” title=”Shocking: Comatose Patient Gives Birth After Decades, Astonishing Caregivers”>recently released video captures the stunned reactions of healthcare workers and staff at Hacienda Healthcare when one of their patients, who had been in a coma for decades, unexpectedly delivers a baby.
Unaware of the woman’s pregnancy, the shocked workers immediately called 911 when the baby boy was born and initially struggled to breathe, as reported by KPHO.
The footage, dated December 29, 2018, showcases the facility adorned with Christmas decorations as the police officer navigates through the premises and interviews staff members.
“And when I looked, it was a [incomphrensible]. The baby coming,” a nurse told the officer.
Watch KPHO’s coverage of the incident:
An unnamed former employee, referred to as a “longtime source” by KHPO, revealed that the aide who first discovered the baby was deeply traumatized.
According to the source, “When she opened the diaper, there was a head. And that poor aide didn’t work for a month. She was so distraught, so traumatized by the whole thing.”
In the video, the officer was informed that no male caregivers had access to the victim, who was 29 years old at the time and had been in a vegetative state since nearly drowning at the age of 3.
A court-ordered DNA test later confirmed that nurse Nathan Sutherland was the biological father of the baby.
Sutherland pleaded guilty to two felony charges and received the maximum sentence of 10 years at the time.
Although Sutherland received credit for the nearly three years he spent in jail prior to sentencing, he will be required to register as a sex offender upon release and will remain on supervised probation for life, as reported by the Arizona Republic.
During his sentencing, Sutherland expressed remorse, saying, “To the victim — I’m sorry. You didn’t deserve to be hurt no matter what was going on in my personal life and the demons I was fighting. I had no right to put you through that. No words can express how painfully sorry I am.”
Hacienda Healthcare released a statement expressing their ongoing sympathy for the victim and her family, stating, “Seeing video from that night almost 5 years ago is still gut-wrenching. Our hearts again go out to the victim and her family – and we remain disgusted by the behavior of the nurse who harmed a patient.”
According to KPHO, the boy will celebrate his fifth birthday in December and is now walking and talking, though still unaware of the circumstances surrounding his birth. The mother’s family transferred her to another facility in Phoenix after the incident, where she continues to maintain good health.
