VIDEO: Biden Turns National Tragedies Into Personal Spotlight for 2 Mins
President Biden’s Empathy for Wildfire Survivors
During his visit with survivors of the Maui Wildfires on Monday, President Joe Biden shared a personal experience that resonated with the crowd. He revealed that he understood the pain of losing a home because a small fire had once broken out in his Delaware residence back in 2004.
“I don’t want to compare difficulties, but we have a little sense, Jill and I, what it’s like to lose a home,” Biden told the crowd. He recounted how the fire, which firefighters deemed “insignificant,” had put his wife, his ’67 Corvette, and his cat at risk.
Putting Others First
President Biden has been known to relate to others’ tragedies by sharing his own personal losses. Earlier that same day, while delivering remarks to honor the victims of the wildfires, he mentioned his first wife and daughter, who tragically passed away in a car accident in 1972. The devastating fires have claimed the lives of 115 individuals, with over 1,000 still missing.
Empathy Amidst Tragedy
Following the terrorist bombing in Afghanistan that claimed the lives of 13 U.S. service members, family members of the victims who met with President Biden expressed their disappointment. They revealed that he continuously brought up his own son, Beau Biden, who had served in Iraq and passed away from cancer in 2015.
“It was more about his son. My son wasn’t mentioned,” said Jim McCollum, the father of Lance Corporal Rylee McCollum, one of the brave Americans who lost their lives in the ISIS bombing.
