President Biden’s Inflation Reduction Act: More Than Meets the Eye
Last week, President Joe Biden made a surprising admission about his signature Inflation Reduction Act. In a candid moment at an Aug. 10 fundraiser, he revealed that the name of the act was somewhat misleading. Rather than being solely focused on fighting inflation, the act is primarily aimed at providing alternative solutions that will generate economic growth.
Debate and Criticism Surrounding the Act
Even before Biden’s admission, lawmakers and economists had raised concerns about the act’s true intentions. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R., Ky.) criticized it as a collection of tax hikes and green initiatives that Democrats have long desired, with a new label slapped on the front. The Congressional Budget Office’s report also indicated that the act’s impact on inflation would be minimal in the coming years. The Penn Wharton Budget Model echoed this sentiment, stating that the act’s effect on inflation would be statistically insignificant.
A Misleading Name
Despite these criticisms, Biden and other Democrats continued to argue that the act would indeed combat inflation, often pointing to its name as evidence. In July 2022, Biden confidently declared, “This bill is fighting inflation,” during remarks at the White House. Senator Elizabeth Warren (D., Mass.) praised the act’s naming, acknowledging its cleverness.
Defending the Act
When questioned about the potentially misleading title, Senator Joe Manchin (D., W.Va.) dismissed the notion, asserting that the act’s intentions were clear. White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre defended the act, emphasizing its overall impact on reducing the deficit.
