Walz says he ‘would beat the s***’ out of Vance ‘if I could’ in rejection of bipartisanship
Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz (D-MN) said on Tuesday that he “would beat the s*** out of” Vice President JD Vance if given the chance, a remark that underscored his frustration with calls for bipartisanship amid escalating political tensions over immigration and enforcement.
Walz made the comment during an interview with Tim Miller on the Bulwark podcast while discussing the state’s response to federal immigration activity and criticism from President Donald Trump and national Republicans.
The governor touted himself as a bipartisan leader who is willing to make compromises, but said traditional bipartisan cooperation is a nonstarter in the case of Minneapolis.
Walz’s comments occur against a backdrop of severe unrest and protests denouncing ICE and the Trump administration rip through Minnesota. The deaths of two U.S. citizens at the hands of federal law enforcement in January have caused a severe divide between state and local leadership and the federal government.
Vance has been vocal about his distaste for Walz and Minnesota leadership while also strongly defending immigration operations in the state.
“They have created the chaos so they can have moments like yesterday, where someone tragically dies and politicians get to grandstand about the evils of enforcing the border,” Vance said in an X post Jan. 25. “The solution is staring everyone in the face. I hope authorities in Minneapolis stop this madness.”
The proposition of trading blows came when Miller asked Walz if he gave Vance “too much benefit of the doubt” on the debate stage in 2024.
Walz may not have been suggesting actual violence, but rather that if the two stepped on the debate stage today, the governor would have better arguments prepared.
In reminiscing on the past vice presidential debates, where Walz was Kamala Harris’s No. 2, he said he was “sucked in” to the statements made by Vance.
“Making the case that housing prices are up because of immigration and that we should build on federal lands, it was such a crazy thing,” Walz said. “But then when I watched him, I got sucked into that. And if you remember, this was right in that moment of eating dogs and cats. I took that bait and thought that that was the argument of how outrageous it was. That was not the argument.”
The interview came as Walz prepared to meet with border czar Tom Homan to discuss federal enforcement operations in Minnesota.

Homan said the meeting with Walz was productive, and while they can’t agree on everything, they need to support law enforcement in the mission of keeping the public safe.
The meeting was set up after Trump had phone calls with both Walz and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey in an effort to mediate rising tensions in Minnesota.
