Walz prepares to deploy Minnesota National Guard as tensions boil over ICE shooting
Gov. Tim Walz (D-MN) announced on Wednesday that he is prepared to deploy the Minnesota National Guard in anticipation of protests following a fatal shooting committed by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer in Minneapolis.
“We have soldiers in training and prepared to be deployed if necessary,” Walz said, noting they are “our National Guard troops.”
“They are teachers in your community, they’re business owners, they’re construction professionals, they are Minnesotans,” he added. “Minnesota will not allow our community to be used as a prop in a national political fight. We will not take the bait.”
The Democratic governor described the warning order as a “heads up” to Minnesota residents in case protests become violent. He urged the public to protest peacefully despite their anger.
“We can’t give them what they want,” Walz said of the Trump administration. “The hearts and minds of the people in this state are on our side.”
The shooting unfolded earlier Wednesday when a 37-year-old woman allegedly attempted to run over an ICE officer with her vehicle. In response, the officer opened fire on the driver.
The Department of Homeland Security claims the officer was acting in self-defense. Walz and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey insist otherwise.
At a press conference after the incident, Frey told ICE to “get the f*** out of Minneapolis.”
DHS deployed up to 2,000 additional ICE officers to the city this week as the Trump administration detains illegal immigrants and investigates Somali-linked fraud schemes in Minnesota.
Video footage of the scene shows the driver crashing her vehicle into a white car after the officer shot her through the windshield. President Donald Trump said the officer was hospitalized and that it was “hard to believe he is alive,” though video shows the officer walking around the scene afterward.
Police have not definitively identified the deceased victim yet, as the investigation remains ongoing, according to Walz. He intends to speak with the victim’s family once the person is identified.
Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison, a Democrat, vowed to hold accountable anyone who broke the law in the ICE-involved shooting.
“While there’s a lot we don’t know at this time, let me be clear about one thing: Donald Trump’s decision to send thousands of armed ICE agents to Minnesota is causing serious harm and spreading terror throughout our communities,” Ellison said in a statement on X.
“His reckless decision to escalate the aggression and number of immigration agents is a causal factor, regardless of the outcome of an investigation into this tragic death,” he added. “I will do everything I can to change this awful path we are on.”

Walz said earlier his public safety team is investigating the shooting.
It remains to be seen whether protests over Wednesday’s shooting become violent, but it wouldn’t be unprecedented given Minneapolis’s history with riots as seen in 2020 following the police murder of George Floyd.
