Virginia Elects Democrat Jay Jones As Attorney General
the article reports on democrat Jay Jones’s election as Virginia’s Attorney General, highlighting controversy surrounding his campaign. Jones is projected to have defeated incumbent Republican Jason Miyares by a notable margin. The race attracted notable attention after the revelation of text messages Jones sent in 2022, in which he fantasized about assassinating a Republican state lawmaker, including wishes of harm toward the lawmaker’s family. these messages were widely criticized, with miyares confronting Jones about them during a debate. Additionally, Jones faced scrutiny over a reckless driving incident and questions about how he completed court-mandated community service. Despite these controversies, Jones won the election, prompting discussions about voter attitudes toward political violence and accountability.
In a stunning endorsement of violence against their political opponents, Virginia voters elected Democrat Jay Jones to be their next attorney general on Tuesday.
According to The New York Times, Jones is projected to defeat incumbent Republican Attorney General Jason Miyares in the battle to become the commonwealth’s chief law enforcement officer. As of publication, preliminary results show Jones leading Miyares by 5.2 points, with 92 percent of votes tabulated.
The race to become Virginia’s attorney general was rocked by a series of unearthed text messages Jones sent to a state GOP lawmaker in 2022. First reported by National Review in early October, the messages showed Jones fantasizing about assassinating Virginia’s then-Republican House speaker.
As The Federalist’s Breccan Thies summarized, “Jones … presented a hypothetical … where he had only two bullets and three options to kill people: violent Cambodian dictator Pol Pot, responsible for millions of deaths; Adolf Hitler, another violent dictator responsible for millions of deaths; or Gilbert, a Republican who served in the state House for nearly 20 years.”
“Gilbert gets two bullets to the head,” Jones wrote in the text messages. “Spoiler: put Gilbert in the crew with the two worst people you know and he receives both bullets every time.”
Jones also “suggested he wished Gilbert’s wife could watch her own child die in her arms so that Gilbert might reconsider his political views” in a follow-up phone call, “prompting [the GOP state lawmaker] to hang up the phone in disgust,” according to a source cited by National Review.

Miyares blasted Jones for wishing violence on his political opponent and his children during the two candidates’ Oct. 16 debate. Directly addressing Jones, the Republican AG said that if he were “really sorry” for his rhetoric, “[he] wouldn’t be running.”
“How in the world could you ever show compassion and comfort a grieving mother that has ever lost a child to violence?” Miyares said. “Because Virginians, there is no cry like the cry of a mother that has lost her child. A prosecutor knows this because they’ve stood in that courtroom. Jay Jones has never understood this because he’s not a prosecutor. He’s a politician trying to save his career.”

Jones’ campaign was further marred by a 2022 speeding incident, in which he was charged with reckless driving for going 116 mph in a 70 mph stretch of highway.
As The Federalist previously reported, Jones’ 1,000 hours of court-mandated community service were allegedly split between working at the Virginia NAACP and “Meet Our Moment,” Jones’ own political action committee that seeks to train Democrats to run for office. While it remains unclear how Jones spent his time with both organizations, it’s worth noting that he and his then-law firm represented the Virginia NAACP in a lawsuit against GOP Gov. Glenn Youngkin’s administration during the time period in which Jones purportedly did his “community service” with the group.
A special prosecutor was recently appointed in an investigation into Jones’ 2022 reckless driving case, according to reports.
